Maisie Sutton pushed open the door, holding a fruit basket. "Lyra."
Lyra, who had been dying of boredom on strict bed rest, lit up at the sight of a visitor. "Maisie!"
"Rowan..."
Rowan offered a brief nod. He was lounging on the hospital bed next to Lyra, his arm draped possessively around her. They had been watching a movie on the projector, which he promptly switched off.
Rowan looked at Maisie, then casually asked Lyra, "Do you want to see a dance?"
Lyra's eyes went wide. "Absolutely."
Rowan shifted his gaze back to Maisie. "Your cousin-in-law wants to see you dance."
Maisie swallowed hard. There was no way she was doing a pop routine in this room. Rowan's oppressive aura was far more intimidating than performing in front of a stadium full of thousands of screaming fans. Her limbs instantly stiffened. "Uh, Rowan, Lyra, I'm just going to go to the pantry and cut this fruit up for you!"
She turned on her heel and practically sprinted out the door.
She was moving so fast she nearly collided with Andrea in the hallway.
Lyra glared playfully at the man beside her. "Someone finally comes to keep me company, and you immediately terrify her into running away."
Rowan chuckled, his tone teasing. "I'll go drag her back, then."
"Don't bother," Lyra said with a wicked grin. "I've got another dancer right here."
Rowan raised an eyebrow. "Who?"
Lyra stared pointedly at him, her eyes curving into a smile. "I'm not allowed out of this bed. Who else could it be?"
Rowan held her gaze, saying nothing. A slow, dark amusement rippled through his eyes. "How about we find something else to do instead..."
...
While Wesley was still digging for dirt on Finn Ford, he managed to gather everything on Kayla Harrington within a matter of days.
Rowan ordered Wesley to reach out through university alumni channels to set up a meeting with her.
When Kayla arrived at the private tea house, she was a bundle of nerves, completely shocked that Rowan Jameson had requested her presence.
"Relax," Rowan said smoothly. "I'm only here to clarify something with you."
He slid a digital camera across the table. The screen displayed dozens of candid, high-quality photos of her and Waylon Grayson walking together and meeting in private.
In the video, Waylon was cold, efficient, and utterly merciless—a terrifying contrast to the refined gentleman Kayla thought she knew. A cold chill crept up her spine. A profound sense of dread washed over her.
She hesitated, looking from the screen to the unlit cigarette in Rowan's hand. "Weren't you two friends?"
"I'm only just now learning how complicated he really is," Rowan said, omitting the detail about the corporate mole. "He is far more dangerous than I gave him credit for."
Kayla looked down, her heart in tatters. The romantic fantasy she had been quietly harboring was suddenly coated in ice.
Seeing her shattered expression, Rowan delivered his final piece of advice. "When you aren't sure who to trust, focus on your family. Focus on the twins. Blood and a stable home will always be more reliable than manufactured romance."
Kayla choked back a sob as tears finally spilled down her cheeks.
Rowan sighed internally, speaking with half-joking sincerity. "Honestly, I'm just glad Lyra isn't blinded by love. Whenever anyone crosses her, she happily makes it my problem."
"But thank god she isn't. If she started swooning over some manipulative bastard, my life would be infinitely harder."
Rowan stood up with a faint smile. "Kayla, I'll have someone drive you home."
As Rowan stepped out, Wesley immediately entered. "Mrs. Fairchild, my car is right outside."
"Thank you, but I'll be fine," Kayla said, hurriedly wiping her tears.
