Elara Townsend had been caught stealing cash from a wealthy man she was on a date with. Blinded by greed after seeing his expensive watch and designer accessories, she waited until he went to the restroom and swiped a thick stack of bills from his wallet.
The man noticed the missing cash the second he returned. He demanded the restaurant pull the security footage, which perfectly captured Elara's blatant theft.
The stolen amount was high enough to constitute felony grand larceny, and the victim refused to settle out of court. Elara was prosecuted, convicted, and sent to the exact same prison block as Tabitha and the rest of the disgraced Ford family.
The Sapphire Room, the luxury restaurant that was the Ford family's sole remaining source of income, quickly fell like a house of cards.
The landlord had already heard whispers that the Fords had crossed the Jameson family. Realizing they were drowning in legal fees and couldn't make rent, the landlord invoked a breach-of-contract clause and terminated the lease, ordering them to vacate the premises immediately. No amount of begging from Jonathan Ford could change his mind.
Halfway across the world in California, Jasmine received the cascade of catastrophic news. She sat frozen, staring at the wall like a statue.
Back at the clinic, Wesley knocked softly and entered the room. "Mr. Jameson, Finn Ford is waiting in the lobby of the corporate headquarters. He's begging for an audience with you."
Rowan was leaning back in his chair, reviewing a stack of corporate files. His voice was ice. "Ignore him."
Lyra glanced over, remembering how both Victoria and Rowan had once praised Finn for his competence.
Catching the shift in her expression, Rowan snapped the file shut and leaned closer. "What? Do you know him?"
Lyra quickly reached out and grabbed Rowan's sleeve. "I didn't ask you to lock him up! He's the only normal person in that entire family."
"You call me a lunatic on a daily basis, but he gets to be 'normal'?" Rowan's voice was dangerously flat. "You used to be so close with Jasmine. I'm sure you two are quite well acquainted."
Wesley's mind raced. He couldn't tell if Lyra had made the comment innocently or if she was actively trying to set Finn up. If it was intentional, this delicate, fragile woman was far more terrifying than anyone realized.
Catching a sharp look from his boss, Wesley didn't dare linger. He bowed slightly and swiftly exited the room, mentally preparing to rip Finn Ford's life apart to find a single, exploitable flaw.
