Rowan usually had no interest in Caleb's private life.
But he couldn't risk it blowing back on Lyra.
Lyra clearly adored Kayla. If Caleb's marriage fractured and turned into a public scandal, Lyra would be a nervous wreck. With her currently on strict bed rest, any severe emotional spike could trigger another bout of agonizing contractions, and that would shave years off Rowan's life.
It was better to just have the situation monitored.
Night fell over the hospital. Rowan, running on fumes, finally fell into a deep sleep in the recliner beside Lyra's bed. He plunged into a painfully vivid nightmare.
In the dream, he stood alone in front of a crumbling, decaying apartment complex. The air was damp and suffocating.
Waylon Grayson stood next to him, his voice casually cruel. "Lyra is inside."
Rowan's brow furrowed in panicked confusion. "I gave you fifty million dollars to make sure she was taken care of. Why is she living in a place like this?"
Waylon's expression was unreadable. "She gave it all to her sister-in-law."
Rowan froze. All he had to do was step forward and push open the rusted metal door, but his body refused to move. He was paralyzed by dread.
After what felt like an eternity of agonizing hesitation, he forced himself to shove the rusted door open.
Inside, Lyra was curled up on a filthy, bare mattress. Her beautiful, vibrant face was hollowed out, her cheeks sunken in. She was so emaciated she was entirely unrecognizable.
A soft rustling sound from the hospital bed jerked Rowan awake. Cold sweat clung to his shirt. He immediately reached out, gently cupping Lyra's warm, soft cheek to ensure she was really there, safe and sound. Only then did the vice around his chest loosen.
The next day, Rowan had his private chefs prepare an endless rotation of gourmet, nutrient-dense meals. Every two hours, he sat by the bed and hand-fed her bird's nest soup.
Madeline's jaw dropped. "Lyra, that is incredible!"
"It's nothing, really. I just want the baby to see the world."
Sabrina bit her tongue. She wanted to point out that Lyra was celebrating far too early. Rowan was clearly just humoring her to keep her blood pressure down and protect the pregnancy. A million things could happen during the divorce proceedings...
Sabrina glanced over at Andrea, who was standing quietly in the corner. The bodyguard immediately averted her eyes, pretending she hadn't heard a word.
...
Meanwhile, Wesley ruthlessly executed Rowan's orders regarding the Ford family.
Tabitha was riding her electric scooter through an intersection when she struck an elderly woman. The woman suffered severe spinal injuries. The victim's family was furious and aggressively refused any out-of-court financial settlement, demanding criminal charges. The evidence of Tabitha's negligence and aggressive refusal to make amends was undeniable. She was arrested for vehicular assault and thrown in a jail cell.

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
