At that moment, Victoria burst into the room, immediately shielding Lyra behind her. Her tone was absolute steel. "Officers, my daughter-in-law is five months pregnant and physically fragile. Until you have concrete evidence, you are absolutely not putting those cuffs on her!"
Charles stepped up beside her, his authoritative aura radiating dominance. "The incident occurred on the third-floor balcony. You haven't secured witness testimonies, and you haven't reviewed the surveillance footage. Slapping cuffs on a pregnant woman based entirely on hearsay from an anonymous caller is a gross violation of procedure. We will cooperate with your investigation, but those handcuffs stay off her."
Right on their heels, Vivienne stormed in. Her previous hostility vanished as she ruthlessly turned on the police. "Are you investigating a crime or running a witch hunt? A few rumors downstairs and you barge in here ready to make an arrest? She is carrying a Jameson heir. If you stress her into a miscarriage, which one of you is going to take the fall for it? Don't even think about taking her away without hard proof!"
Charles and Victoria flanked Lyra on either side, while Caleb and Leo rushed in to barricade the front. The entire family closed ranks around her, forming an impenetrable human shield.
Yet, as Lyra glanced through the gaps between her fiercely protective family, a hollow ache ripped through her chest.
The one person missing was her husband.
Rowan was gone, rushing the bleeding Jasmine to the hospital instead of standing by her side.
A freezing terror slowly clawed its way up from her stomach. Her hands, resting limply at her sides, curled into tight fists. The fragile composure she had been fighting so hard to maintain began to fracture.
The lead officer frowned, his bias evident in his pressing tone. "Mrs. Jameson, you were the only person present on the balcony. If you didn't push her, then who did?"
Delilah grabbed her daughter's hand, sheer panic writing lines across her face as she opened her mouth to argue.
"I will cooperate with the investigation," Lyra said quietly, cutting her off.
Downstairs, Alistair sat alone in the center of the emptied hall. He took a long, steadying breath before giving the final order. "Have the staff clear the remaining guests and settle all the bills. Do not make this harder on anyone who came to celebrate tonight."
Charles immediately deployed their security to usher the guests out, though many lingered in small clusters near the exits, whispering furiously, finding the bloody drama far more entertaining than the lavish dinner.
