Victoria Jameson rattled off a seemingly endless list of pregnancy precautions.
Charles Jameson chimed in as well, reminding her to slow down her daily movements and always take the elevator instead of the stairs. Rowan had given her the exact same speech, so Lyra simply listened in silence.
Victoria then asked if she was settling well into Blackwood Manor, if the chef's meals suited her taste, and if she was sleeping soundly through the night.
Lyra answered carefully, maintaining a polite facade until they finally left.
Rowan gradually began turning down non-essential social engagements, making a point to rush back to Blackwood Manor every day to join her for lunch and dinner.
However, as her pregnancy neared the five-month mark, Lyra found herself increasingly plagued by relentless nightmares.
Every time she jolted awake in the early hours of the morning, her body would be trembling, a cold sheen of sweat coating her forehead and back. When Rowan reached out in the dark to touch her brow, his fingertips were always met with damp, freezing skin.
He could only dry her sweat and hold her tightly through the night, murmuring low, comforting words against her hair. Often, it wasn't until dawn broke that they could finally catch a few moments of shallow rest.
On the day of her scheduled prenatal checkup, Rowan completely cleared his schedule, staying by Lyra's side through every single test.
When the results came out, Rowan's expression turned somber.
"The patient has been experiencing sustained anxiety, exceptionally poor sleep quality, physical depletion, and an unstable fetal heart rate," Dr. Gable explained, her tone grave. "Prolonged emotional distress in the mother directly impacts fetal development. If this continues, the risk of complications will skyrocket."
Lyra's days of suppressed panic had ultimately manifested in the stark reality of the medical report.
Rowan turned his head to look at Lyra's pale face, a suffocating ache tightening his chest. He wrapped a protective arm around her shoulders and earnestly asked the doctor, "Is there a safe way to treat this? We will follow your instructions to the letter."
Thinking back to the alarming numbers on her medical chart, Rowan couldn't bring himself to ruthlessly deny her.
If returning to her family could quell the terror haunting her, he had no right to stand in her way.
"I can move to the Fairchild estate with you," he finally said, his tone resolute.
"I'll have a team transport all your pregnancy essentials and supplements over. The security detail will come with us to ensure no one disturbs you. But you have to promise me one thing—I sleep in your room."
Lyra lifted her eyes to look at him, a flicker of surprise passing through her gaze.
Rowan leaned down, pressing a tender kiss against her forehead, his voice softening completely. "As long as it helps you sleep soundly and keeps Pip safe, I'll agree to whatever you want. Just... please don't leave me behind. Deal?"
