Lyra temporarily moved back into the Fairchild estate.
Andrea and Mrs. Whittaker tagged along to ensure she was properly cared for. With the sudden addition of a dedicated bodyguard, a private caretaker, and a full security detail, the already lively Fairchild residence became even more bustling.
Caleb's tone was caught halfway between a playful complaint and genuine brotherly affection. "With all these extra mouths, they're going to eat us out of house and home."
Hearing that Rowan was coming over for dinner that evening, Mrs. Whittaker, Martha, and the new cook had already started prepping the kitchen. Even Kayla was in there helping out.
When dinner was finally served on the table, little Harry clutched his toy, determined to sit next to Lyra. But seeing the imposing man seated beside her, the child grew timid, hesitating to approach.
Kayla offered a warm smile. "Harry, say hello to Rowan."
Harry hesitated for a few seconds before murmuring timidly, "Rowan."
Before Rowan could even respond, Lyra reached out with a soft smile, gently pinching the little boy's chubby cheek. "Such a good boy. Come sit right next to me."
Caleb chimed in from across the table. "Rowan, do you prefer boys or girls?"
Rowan replied evenly, "I'm hoping for a boy, but a brilliant girl would be perfect too."
Caleb immediately reached over to pat his own daughter, who was quietly eating her meal. "Our Chloe is definitely going to be brilliant."
Delilah laughed. "Look at you, showing off."
After dinner, Rowan sat in Lyra's bedroom, working on his laptop. Seeing Lyra grab her pajamas, he asked, "Are you going to shower now? Let me wash you first. I'll shower after you're asleep."
Lyra immediately refused. "No need. I can wash myself."
"Whenever I'm home at Blackwood Manor, I'm the one who bathes you."
Lyra lifted her chin defiantly, marching toward the bathroom with her pajamas in hand. "I was forced into that. Here, if you try anything, I'll scream the house down."
Rowan could only chuckle in defeat.
"You're just keeping her on too short of a leash."
Caleb picked up the bottle and poured Rowan a half-glass of sake, teasing him with a grin. "At the end of the day, a woman feels safest in her own family's home. You had her locked up in Blackwood Manor. It doesn't matter how grand or luxurious the house is; if it feels cold, it won't hold her heart."
Kayla took a sip of her tea and nodded in agreement. "We spend a lot of time chatting with her to keep her mind occupied. You really don't need to be so tense all the time."
Rowan raised his glass. "Then I'll have to trouble you both to keep a close eye on her. My schedule is about to get chaotic, so if anything happens, call me immediately."
"Relax. She's family, of course we're going to take care of her." Caleb clinked his glass against Rowan's. "It's rare we get a chance to unwind. Let's just drink, and try to go three sentences without mentioning your wife."
"Deal." Rowan's lips curved into a faint smirk as he took a slow sip of his drink.
He and Caleb spent the evening discussing business affairs and casual day-to-day matters. Kayla genuinely enjoyed listening to Rowan speak; she felt she could learn a lot from his sharp insights.
By the time the drinks were finished, Rowan returned to the second-floor bedroom. Pushing the door open, he saw Lyra lying on her side, resting against a soft pillow. Her long lashes were lowered, her breathing deep and even. She had already fallen into a sound sleep.
