Rowan gathered his clothes and stepped into the bathroom. After toweling his hair dry, he approached the bed. Slipping beneath the covers, he gently wrapped his arm around her waist, carefully avoiding her swollen belly as he pulled her securely against him. The bed wasn't particularly large, making it a bit cramped for his frame, but thankfully, Lyra slept soundly through the rest of the night.
Early the next morning, Lyra shifted, feeling the solid, warm wall of Rowan's chest pressed against her back. The man was still asleep, his strong arm wrapped around her like an iron band.
Afraid to make any sudden movements, she simply tilted her head slightly and poked his firm forearm with her index finger.
Rowan was a light sleeper. His eyes slowly fluttered open, and he pressed a soft kiss to the crown of her head. "You're awake? How did you sleep? Any nightmares?"
"None." Lyra shook her head, her tone noticeably lighter. "I woke up once in the middle of the night but fell right back to sleep."
A heavy weight lifted from Rowan's chest. He rested his palm against her pregnant belly in a soothing motion. "That's good."
After washing up, they headed downstairs together. The rest of the house was already awake, and the dining table was laden with a lavish breakfast prepared by Mrs. Whittaker. Kayla warmly invited them to sit and eat.
Rowan stood in the entryway, adjusting his suit cuffs with a faint, polite smile. "I'll have to pass."
Caleb looked up at him. "You don't even have time for a quick bite? In that much of a rush?"
"I have an international video conference first thing this morning. The schedule is brutal, so I need to get there early to prep." Rowan's gaze shifted to Lyra, his voice instantly softening. "I'll come back to be with you tonight. Mrs. Whittaker and the guards are staying here. Call me the second you need anything."
Lyra nodded, watching him turn and walk out the door before taking her seat at the table to eat.
Kayla took it all in. She served Lyra a bowl of soothing soup and let out an admiring sigh. "Honestly, Rowan looks so intimidating and ruthless when he's out handling business, but the second he's in front of you, all his sharp edges vanish. You two are so in love. I'm completely jealous."
Lyra's hand paused on her spoon, a faint pink dusting her cheeks. "You just haven't seen him when he's being difficult," she murmured defensively.
"It's perfect just the way it is. Nobody is flawless." Delilah patted her daughter's hand before shooting a look at Caleb. "You hear that? Treat your wife better. Don't make her jealous of other women."
Lyra blinked.
Kayla was definitely using the moment to send Caleb a message.
Her brother could be as dense as a brick sometimes. Romance just wasn't his strong suit.
Later that evening, while Kayla was driving home from work, her car suddenly broke down. Standing by the side of the road, she called Caleb. He quickly arranged for a tow truck, assuring her it would arrive shortly.
Despite her stunning beauty, her temper had been utterly atrocious.
In that life, Lyra had treated Kayla terribly, showing her absolutely no respect.
She had relentlessly stalked Rowan, using every manipulative trick in the book, only to push him further away.
She neglected her family, and only at the bitter end—knowing Kayla was pregnant with the Fairchild twins—did she leave her five million dollars.
Outside of her own family and her two chaotic friends, Maddie and Leo, absolutely no one liked her.
Waylon couldn't help but think that if Lyra had just remained the spoiled brat she was in her past life, everything unfolding now would be infinitely simpler.
"Is something wrong?" Kayla asked.
Waylon snapped out of his thoughts. "Nothing. I just hope they treat you right. I've always worried about you."
