Rowan spent the rest of the afternoon tearing through a mountain of work at the office, not returning to Blackwood Manor until late that night.
He quietly showered and slipped into bed, instinctively pulling Lyra into his arms.
Half an hour later, the room was filled with nothing but the sound of even breathing.
But deep into the night, Lyra was pulled into a nightmare, her mind violently rewinding to the moment Jasmine had shoved her down the stairs in her past life.
"Ah!"
A piercing sense of suffocation sent a violent jolt through her body. She bolted upright, drenched in a layer of freezing sweat.
Rowan snapped the lamp on and immediately wrapped his arms around her, carefully avoiding her stomach. He rubbed soothing circles into her back. "What is it?"
"She pushed me."
Tiny, suppressed sobs tore from her throat. Lyra's eyes instantly flooded with tears.
Rowan went completely rigid. "How did she push you?"
Lyra buried her face in his neck. "On the staircase at the Jameson Residence. She shoved me when I was pregnant, and I lost Pip..."
Rowan's arms locked around her, caging her safely against his warm chest. "Why did she push you?"
"Because she's a psychopath. She didn't want Pip to be born. Because then everyone would know he was yours, and her lie about saving you from the ocean would be exposed..."
Rowan lowered his head, pressing a feather-light kiss to the crown of her sweat-dampened hair. He pulled her even tighter while carefully protecting her belly. "Didn't we live at Blackwood Manor back then?"
Lyra's eyes snapped open, suddenly sharp and completely lucid. "Why would you buy Blackwood Manor for our marriage? You bought it for Jasmine. I'm sorry for intruding."
"Don't be ridiculous," Rowan said softly. "Marriage wasn't even on my mind when I bought this place."
"Liar..."
"I'm not lying to you." His voice was incredibly low, laden with utter helplessness. He rested his forehead against hers. "I didn't buy Blackwood Manor for anyone in particular, and I certainly didn't buy it for Jasmine."
The next morning, Lyra slept in until past nine.
Not long after she finished breakfast, the butler announced that Charles and Victoria had arrived.
Lyra momentarily froze, unsure of what to even call them anymore.
The couple had staff carry several heavy crates of high-end health supplements into the living room. Ornate gift boxes piled high on the coffee table—ginseng, bird's nest, and premium prenatal vitamins.
Victoria smiled warmly, pushing the boxes toward her. "Here, we prepared these specifically for you. You need to focus on keeping your strength up."
Lyra's lips parted, politely trying to refuse. "You shouldn't have brought so much. My daily meals are more than enough. I could never finish all this."
Victoria naturally took Lyra's arm and guided her to sit down. "Lyra, you're officially married to Rowan now. Let the unhappy memories from the past go. From now on, you only need to focus on the good things..."
"Alright. Thank you," Lyra said softly. In the end, she simply couldn't bring herself to call them 'Mom and Dad', choosing instead to lower her eyes and listen quietly.
Charles stood by, observing the entire exchange. He didn't take offense at her distance, simply chalking it up to the emotional sensitivity of pregnancy.
