On normal days, Lyra would rely on the television to drown out the oppressive silence during their meals.
Though sometimes that backfired. She would spot Josie Somerset acting on screen, and if Josie was the female lead, Lyra would imagine the tortured second male lead as Rowan—secretly relishing his fictional misery.
Rowan's phone buzzed. He stood up and walked into the living room to take the call, leaving Maisie and Lyra alone in the dining room.
Maisie clutched her fork tightly. "L-Lyra, I think I'd better head home after this," she whispered nervously.
"You're not going to stay with me?"
"Yeah," Maisie admitted, visibly spooked. "Is the honeymoon phase over already?"
From the looks of it, they were already deep into the seven-year itch.
"Zane and Lena are so sweet together. They're head over heels. Lena knows how to be affectionate and looks at my brother with these starry eyes. She's just a really cute, sweet girl."
Lyra realized Maisie was dropping a massive hint for her to emulate Lena and thaw out her icy demeanor. "Rowan doesn't go for 'cute'. He prefers the smart, analytical types."
Maisie immediately thought of Jasmine. Sure, Jasmine was cold to everyone else, but she definitely wasn't cold to Rowan. "But Jasmine used to be super affectionate with him!" she blurted out instinctively.
She recalled a dinner from years ago. "My mom took me out to eat with them once. Rowan was right in the middle of a phone call with a client when Jasmine literally grabbed his fork, picked up a BBQ rib, and fed it to him. And he just opened his mouth and ate it! The client on the other end heard him chewing and rushed to end the call. Jasmine shot us this smug little smile, and afterward, Rowan just laughed like he thought it was adorable."
The vivid mental image sent a sharp, suffocating ache right through Lyra's chest. "Did your mother send you here?"
"What? No!" Maisie blinked, utterly baffled but entirely genuine. "I was just trying to show you how to get along with him better, you know? How to act a little more in love."
Lyra was utterly speechless.
"You are surprisingly adorable."
Lyra actively wanted to punt the girl out the window.
Oblivious to the deadly glint in Lyra's eyes, Maisie shoveled down the rest of her food. As soon as Rowan hung up and walked back in, she blurted out a hurried goodbye and scrambled to leave.
Lyra stood up and walked her to the front door, instructing the driver to take her home.
Rowan's face turned lethal. "When I banned Waylon, you didn't say a word. When I ban Zane, suddenly you have an attitude. Go ahead. Say one more word. I dare you."
Lyra clamped her mouth shut, immediately falling silent and refusing to argue further.
At that exact moment, both of them noticed Maisie standing frozen in the entryway.
Maisie offered a petrified, twitching smile. "Rowan... Lyra... I-I came back to grab my phone."
Rowan didn't release his grip on his wife. He just tilted his chin toward the sofa. "Grab it."
Maisie snatched her phone and sprinted out of the house like her life depended on it. Standing outside in the driveway, a violent shudder wracked her body.
*Did Lyra have feelings for my half-brother too?*
*She's out of control. It's like she's determined to conquer every single successful guy in our entire social circle!*

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
