Rowan looked up at her. "Does that mean you don't like it?"
"I'm fine. I'm not a picky eater to begin with," Lyra replied evenly.
Rowan noticed how she instinctively accommodated her family.
"It's honestly hard to imagine you were also raised as the apple of your parents' eyes. Your personality is the complete opposite of Maisie Sutton's."
Lyra's tone was light, without a trace of resentment. "I used to be the youngest in the family, so everyone naturally spoiled me. Now the twins are the youngest, so the family's entire focus has shifted to them. I'm a grown woman; I'm not going to be jealous of toddlers."
Rowan set down his silverware, his gaze turning soft. "That's okay. From now on, I'll be the one spoiling you."
Goosebumps instantly erupted across Lyra's skin. She hurriedly looked away, staring down at her plate. "Just eat your food."
"Tomorrow, I'll have Wesley Wade find two more private chefs to send over," Rowan said.
"One is more than enough," Lyra interjected quickly.
Rowan replied casually, "Then we'll see which one your mom wants to keep, and we'll keep that one."
The moment the words left his mouth, both of them froze. Their eyes met as they suddenly realized the slip of the tongue in his address.
Rowan's lips curled up slightly, and he smoothly corrected himself. "Our mom..."
Lyra pursed her lips and softly smoothed things over. "It's fine."
After all, aside from Grandpa Alistair, she still couldn't bring herself to call Charles or Victoria "Mom" and "Dad" either.

After dinner, Lyra took a short walk out on the lawn.
When Waylon saw her, he greeted her with a tepid, "Mrs. Jameson."
Seeing his cold reaction, Lyra figured he didn't want to talk. She gave a polite nod and turned to leave.
"Brought home by your worst enemy," Waylon mocked suddenly. "Carrying his child, sleeping in his bed."
Lyra clenched her fists, her voice trembling with confusion. "Why... why would you say that to me?"
Waylon's words were heavy with hostility, completely unlike his usual gentle demeanor. "Nothing. Just thinking that if I were in your shoes, I couldn't even imagine it."
Lyra's face paled. "How could you say that to me? I know you look down on me, and I did reach out to you for help, but you didn't actually do anything to help me. How can you sit there and judge me now?"
A suffocating wave of despair crashed over her. "I tried so many things to get him off my back, but you know how he is. He..."
"Save it," Waylon interrupted, having heard Rowan finishing his call and coming up the stairs.
