"How are you feeling?" Rowan walked straight to the edge of the bed, his voice incredibly soft as he tucked the blankets snugly around Lyra. His gaze was entirely focused on her. "Are you tired?"
Lyra shook her head slightly. "No..."
Grandpa Alistair stepped forward, offering a final piece of advice. "Rowan, your only priority right now is Lyra. Nothing is more important than her and that baby. Every other project or business deal can wait. You have the rest of your life to make money..."
"I know," Rowan replied. He had come back specifically to escort his grandfather back to the main estate since they couldn't keep their evening guests waiting. He looked over at Sabrina and Madeline. "Are you two heading out as well?"
The cousins smiled and politely declined. "We'll stay here for a bit. We're planning to keep Lyra company for dinner."
Rowan smiled faintly. "That's perfect. Maybe having you here will help her eat a bit more."
He turned back to the bed and leaned down.
Lyra froze slightly.
Rowan pressed a lingering, tender kiss to her forehead. His eyes were heavy with reluctance to leave. "Get some rest."
With that, he turned and escorted his grandfather out of the room.
Sabrina practically swooned. Rowan was so much softer and more romantic than before.
Inside the chauffeured car, the two men sat in silence for a moment.
Grandpa Alistair's jovial expression had vanished. "Caspian is still stuck abroad. You're keeping him out of the country on purpose, aren't you?"
Rowan stared straight ahead. "Yes."
"What did he do?"
Rowan didn't answer. Jasmine had been nothing but a pawn in Caspian's twisted scheme. If Caspian found out the whole truth—that Rowan had played him from the very beginning—he would be blinded by rage. It wasn't a leap to assume he might target Lyra in retaliation.
Sabrina scrolled through the comments and sighed happily. "It's just a shame you're on bed rest. You won't get to have a proper wedding night."
"She's already pregnant, and you're worried about her wedding night?" Madeline laughed as her phone buzzed. It was Leo.
Madeline immediately slipped into a sickly-sweet tone as she chatted with her fiancé.
Lyra and Sabrina exchanged a look and burst out laughing.
Once the guests finally cleared out that evening, Lyra took a slow, careful shower and slipped into a soft red nightgown.
Around nine o'clock, Rowan finally returned from the second reception.
After showering, he walked into the bedroom to find Lyra resting quietly under the covers. A rush of pure warmth hit his chest. He slid into bed, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her deeply for a long time.
Finally, he pulled back, pressing one last kiss over the fabric covering her stomach, before settling in and holding her as they fell asleep.
