Rowan tapped his knuckles rhythmically against the steering wheel. "Since it's been found, let's go inside."
Lyra's expression turned frigid. She was done playing games. "You cheated on me in our past life, and you had the nerve to call my baby a bastard."
"The gunshot yesterday wiped the slate clean," Rowan replied evenly.
Lyra sneered. "You should've given the gun back to me. The only reason I didn't shoot you was because I didn't know how to drive a yacht back to shore."
Rowan let out a low chuckle. "Yesterday is in the past."
He opened his door and stepped out, walking around the hood to open her door. This time, the smile was gone from his face, replaced by an authority that brooked no argument. "Get out."
Lyra was yanked out of the car, stumbling slightly as she was forced to walk beside him. "You don't even love me, why are you forcing this marriage?"
"I do love you."
Lyra let out a bitter laugh. "I bet someone like you doesn't even know what love means."
Rowan paused and looked back at her. "Lucas Chavez mentioned you like men who act like father figures. If you don't even give me a chance to spend time with you, how do you know I can't be that kind of man for you?"
Lyra stared at him, utterly bewildered. Before she could even form a rebuttal, he pulled her forward again, dragging her into the registration hall.
Rowan kept a firm grip on her wrist the entire time. When they reached the counter to submit their documents, Lyra kept her eyes glued to the floor. She didn't say a single word, leaving Rowan to handle the entire bureaucratic process.
When it was time to take the photo, Lyra remembered that in their past life, Rowan had been the one with a face made of stone. This time, it was her turn to look dead inside.
She was so incredibly tired.
They were going to get divorced eventually anyway. Fine. Let it happen.
At least Pip wouldn't be born illegitimate.
"Lean in a little closer, you two. Give me a smile!" the photographer called out cheerfully.
Rowan wrapped a strong arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. Too exhausted to fight him, Lyra yielded just enough to let her shoulder brush against his, staring blankly into the lens as the flash went off.
Stepping out of The Civil Registry, the bright sunlight was blinding. Lyra gripped the marriage certificate so tightly the edges were starting to crumple.
Wesley and Andrea Nash were waiting by the car. Seeing them approach, both immediately bowed slightly in respect.
"Be good and eat with me. I'll drive you back after. Otherwise, you're coming straight to Blackwood Manor."
Lyra clenched her fists, utterly defeated. Having no other choice, she climbed into the car and let him take her to a restaurant.
Rowan dismissed his assistant and bodyguards.
Throughout the entire lunch, every single bite felt like swallowing glass. She hadn't been seated long before she made an excuse and bolted for the restroom. Her stomach churned violently, and she threw up everything she had just forced down. Terrified that Rowan might follow her and discover the truth, she clamped a hand over her mouth, muffling the sounds of her retching entirely.
After rinsing her mouth, she walked out.
Rowan was standing right outside the door. "Opening the floodgates?"
Lyra glared at him. "Are you an absolute psycho? Why are you standing outside a women's restroom?"
She cursed at him and stormed past.
On the drive back, they passed a pharmacy. Rowan pulled the car over, stepped out, and returned a few minutes later holding a box of anti-diarrhea and stomach medication.
Seeing the box sent a fresh wave of rage boiling through her. She snatched the medicine and threw it squarely at his chest. "Save it for yourself."
