Just then, Caleb's car pulled into the driveway. He stepped out, about to jog over and intercept Rowan's vehicle, when Delilah called out to him from behind.
Caleb paused and hurried back. The family SUV was a bit high, so he carefully helped his mother step down from the backseat.
In that brief window of time, Rowan sped off.
Lyra saw her family, of course, but the central locking system had already clicked shut. No matter how hard she pulled the handle, the door wouldn't budge. All she could do was press her hands helplessly against the glass, watching her family disappear into the distance as her last shred of hope shattered.
The car drove steadily toward The Civil Registry. Lyra sat rigidly in the passenger seat, a suffocating weight pressing down on her chest.
Yesterday, he had only mentioned taking photos. How had it suddenly escalated into a marriage license today?
Getting a certificate. Getting married.
Was she going to have to relive every single tragedy from her past life?
If so, did that mean they would eventually sign divorce papers down the line?
At the very least, Pip wouldn't be born out of wedlock this time.
But Lyra still couldn't accept it. Seeing they were only two streets away from The Civil Registry, she furrowed her brow, clutched her lower abdomen, and curled in on herself, letting her face drain of color. "Rowan, my stomach hurts..."
Rowan had been staring straight ahead, but at her words, his head snapped toward her.
Seeing her face completely pale and devoid of blood, his brow furrowed. For a moment, he genuinely couldn't tell if she was just naturally that pale or if she was actually in agony.
"We'll go to the hospital first."
Rowan immediately whipped the steering wheel around, rerouting them to the nearest hospital.
Lyra let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
Once they arrived, Rowan tried to guide her toward the outpatient clinic to find a specialist he knew. Lyra stopped him. "I need to use the restroom first."
Her original plan had been to hide in a stall and call Victoria for help, but she quickly realized that distant water couldn't put out a nearby fire. A phone call wouldn't save her right now.
The car parked directly in front of the marriage registration office.
Rowan unbuckled his seatbelt. Just as he was about to step out, Lyra unzipped her purse and began frantically digging through it, putting on a flawless act. "That's weird. My ID is gone. I must have dropped it in the bathroom at the hospital."
"I really want to marry you today. But now I have to go get a replacement ID before we can..."
Rowan turned his head slowly. "How badly do you want to?"
"Huh?"
Right on cue, someone knocked twice on the passenger window. Lyra pressed the button to roll it down, and Wesley Wade's hand reached in, holding a familiar piece of plastic. "Miss Fairchild, we located your ID for you."
"Please keep it safe this time."
Living with Rowan felt like being trapped in a psychological horror movie.
Numbly, Lyra took the ID and glanced in the side mirror. Wesley's car must have been tailing them ever since they left the Fairchild estate.
