Panicking, she reached for the water glass in front of her, trying to hide her loss of composure by taking a sip, but her wrist was suddenly caught by Rowan's light grasp.
This sudden touch made both Lyra and Zane freeze.
Rowan's voice was deep, his tone unreadable. "Your glass is over here."
He let go of her hand and steadily slid her actual glass over from his side of the table.
Lyra then realized that in her panic, she had grabbed Zane's glass, not her own.
Her cheeks flushed, and she quickly looked at Zane, whispering an apology. "I'm sorry."
Zane blushed slightly too, his tone gentle. "It's okay."
Their eyes accidentally met, and a silent, ambiguous tension spread through the air.
Rowan took all of this in. The sliver of calm on his face instantly vanished, his expression turning dark and somber.
"Let's eat," Rowan said.
Gripping her fork, Lyra had completely lost her appetite.
He was Vivienne's stepson. He was actual family with Rowan.
She could absolutely never let him join the R&D department now.
As for that ridiculous spark of attraction, the idea of chasing him to be her boyfriend, that was completely out of the question.
Lyra's chest felt tight and chaotic. She instinctively sensed Rowan's gaze on her, filled with scrutiny and chill—he had to be wondering how she knew Zane, and why they were so friendly.
Zane, oblivious to the tension, peeled a salt-and-pepper shrimp and gently placed it on her plate.
"Eat up."
Lyra looked at the food on her plate but didn't pick up her fork.
Zane quickly noticed something was wrong and asked, "Did you bring the contract?"
Hearing him say that, Lyra instinctively reached for her bag; the contract was right inside. But the next second, meeting Rowan's dark, freezing gaze, she froze again.
Lyra stood up. "I'm going to the restroom..."
Thinking of Vivienne, who already disliked her, she gave up. Her family's business had to completely sever ties with the Jameson family.
Even though they had been talking so well all this time, she never expected this—she truly didn't anticipate this twist.
Zane's face turned serious. "She has no say in my life."
"Go back inside." Lyra glanced into the distance. Rowan had walked out with a glowing cigarette between his lips, standing next to Wesley, watching them from afar.
Lyra backed away, got into her car without looking back, slammed the gas, and sped off.
Zane's eyes dimmed. The way she had looked at him like a stranger stopped him in his tracks.
Zane turned back, looking at his cousin who had walked up to him, and asked, "What's your relationship with her?"
Rowan looked at him. "I should be asking you that."
"Is she the reason you refused to join Jameson Tech?"
"Do you know who she is? She's Caspian's girlfriend."

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
