To her absolute shock, Josiah looked completely unfazed.
His lethally handsome face was an unreadable mask of absolute calm. Not a single muscle twitched. He looked like he was either watching a boring movie or had entirely anticipated this exact outcome.
Adele's brow furrowed. She snapped her gaze back to the Maybach, watching York continue to kiss Sharon.
Sharon's eyes were squeezed shut. Was she leaning into it? Was she overwhelmed? Completely dissociated? Or just physically trapped?
Adele couldn't decipher it, and it drove her crazy. Naturally, she looked right back at Josiah.
Josiah picked up his cigarette pack, tapped one out, clamped it between his teeth, and casually reached for his lighter.
But his eyes never once left the scene unfolding inside the Maybach.
Unable to take the silence, Adele blurted, "What do we do?"
Josiah sparked the lighter, taking a long drag. He let out a low, dark chuckle. "Do what? Why would we do anything? Isn't this a good thing?"
Adele blinked, stunned. She sat in silence for a few seconds, letting the logic settle before finally admitting, "Yeah, I guess you're right."
If the two of them actually patched things up, that wouldn't be a tragedy.
Or maybe, this brutal, explosive fight was the wake-up call York needed to realize he actually gave a damn about Sharon. If it sparked a genuine change in him, that could be a massive win.
At the end of the day, when it came to a marriage, outsiders were usually relegated to the bleachers.
After Adele voiced her reluctant agreement, Josiah went completely quiet.
One hand draped casually over the steering wheel, his long, elegant fingers pinned the cigarette. He took several rapid, aggressive drags, burning the cherry so hot it looked ready to ignite the entire car.
Thick, heavy clouds of smoke poured from his lips, entirely engulfing the cabin and obscuring his face in a dense gray fog.
The air grew so toxic that Adele choked, frantically waving her hand to clear the space.
Josiah took one final, devastating drag, turned his head, and effortlessly flicked the burning butt out the window. Without missing a beat, he slammed the shifter into gear. The engine erupted into a guttural, low-end roar.
The violent sound immediately shattered the moment inside the Maybach.
Sharon's mind violently snapped back to reality. Her eyes flew open, but before she could shove York away, he preemptively broke the kiss and turned his head toward the noise.
Sharon followed his gaze.
Adele and Josiah were staring dead at them in absolute silence.
Adele let out a harsh laugh, unable to hold back her absolute exasperation. "You are more paranoid than a fox. Who in their right mind would dare hit on you? I'd end up sleeping with the fishes."
Muttering complaints, she pulled a fresh cigarette from the pack and handed it to him.
Josiah finally took it, accepting the lighter she held out. Lighting it himself, he casually remarked, "It's the inside jobs that always get you."
Adele cracked up, playfully swatting his arm. "You really are incapable of saying a single nice thing."
This man. He had a mouth that could drive anyone completely insane, yet his insults were always wrapped in this high-end, deadpan humor that left you laughing while bleeding out.
Adele took a few more drags, turning to study his profile with genuine disbelief. "I have to say, I'm absolutely floored. For the legendary Crown Prince of the Schuyler family to sit back and swallow that... you've got the patience of an absolute saint."
"Learned it from you," Josiah deadpanned.
Adele froze, nearly choking on a mouthful of smoke from sheer rage.
His venomous tongue was a precision weapon, bypassing armor and stabbing directly into the deepest, most sensitive nerves.
She desperately wanted to punch him, but she knew she'd lose.
Rolling her eyes dramatically, she demanded, "Why didn't you just yank Sharon out of the car and force her to ride with us back there?"
