Finnian stayed silent for a long time before finally giving in. "Felix is Vincent Vaughn's aunt."
Hudson arched an eyebrow. "So, are you looking for her because of the Ring Laser Gyro Technology? Or because the Fairchild Family has some history with her?"
Finnian met his eyes, his voice steady. "Just like you, I'm after the Ring Laser Gyro Tech. The Fairchild Family lacks a strong foundation in the scientific research sector. If we can secure that technology, it would push us forward by leaps and bounds."
Hudson didn't reply immediately. He simply watched him.
Those dark, ink-like eyes seemed exceptionally deep under the warm yellow lights, as if they could pierce straight into the darkest corners of a man's soul.
"Is that so?"
Hudson lowered his gaze, picking up his teacup to take a slow sip. "If you lay it all out so plainly, aren't you worried I'll just take the tech for myself once I find her?"
He let the sentence hang for a second before adding lazily, "Except... you're so eager to distance your family from her that it actually makes me even more curious about the real connection between Felix and the Fairchilds..."
At those words, cold sweat erupted from Finnian's pores, soaking his back in an instant. Yet, he didn't let a single flicker of emotion show on his face. Instead, he gave a helpless shake of his head. "Fine, think whatever you want. I don't expect you to share any information about Felix if you find her, but if you do locate my sister, you have to tell me. The Fairchild Family will compensate you heavily."
"That's easy enough."
The two men chatted a bit longer until the sun began to set outside. The evening clouds looked like spilled paint across the horizon, brilliant and dazzling.
Finnian finally took Sienna and left.
Nora stood in the doorway, reluctantly watching them step into the elevator before she closed the door.
The moment the latch clicked shut, Finnian subconsciously looked down, a barely visible frown pulling at his brow.
Hudson Lancaster... he was far too sharp.
People said Hudson's absolute dominance over San Francisco was just inherited privilege, but in Finnian's eyes, the man's intellect was borderline demonic.
From just a few scattered, insignificant clues, he had managed to piece together the entire truth with terrifying accuracy.
Having a man like that as an ally was a blessing, but making him an enemy...
That would be a living nightmare.
...
As soon as Finnian and Sienna left and the door shut, Hudson pulled Nora straight into his arms, dipping his head to steal a kiss.
"Are you done with the shoot here in Chicago?"
Nora nodded. "Yeah, we have enough footage for post-production. We just need to film a few pick-up shots when we get back."
"Then pack your things. We're going home."
Hearing the noise, Bane's ears twitched. He threw a quick, dismissive glance in Hudson's direction as if to say hello, then buried his face right back into Nora's chest, nudging her hands to demand more pets.
Just then, Liam walked over from the kennels, wearing a floral apron and holding a dog food scoop. Seeing them, he gave a casual wave. "You guys finally made it back..."
Nora looked up, momentarily stunned. "Dr. Harrison? What... what are you doing here?"
Before Liam could answer, Bane suddenly spun around and bolted back the way he came. He started running manic circles around Luna, occasionally stopping to affectionately groom her fur, the absolute definition of a hopeless romantic.
Seeing Luna trot happily over to her, Nora reached out and gently stroked her small head.
Perhaps due to the long time apart, Luna flinched slightly at first, but then leaned into her palm, seeking the warmth.
"She's put on a lot of weight," Nora laughed, rubbing the dog's little belly.
"She's pregnant, of course she's fat," Liam deadpanned.
"..."
Nora immediately snatched her hand back.
Pregnant...
Already?
