Finnian kept a protective arm around Sienna the entire way back to the hotel.
Because they had called ahead, they both managed to take hot showers and change into fresh clothes immediately upon arrival.
"Sienna..." Nora pulled Sienna into the bedroom, holding her hands with a face full of agonizing guilt. "I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. They were coming for me, and I dragged you into it..."
"What are you talking about?" Sienna interrupted, gently flicking Nora's forehead. "Since when do we keep score between us? If you really feel that bad about it, just buy me a massive dinner later."
Nora tried to say more, but Sienna chuckled. "Alright, alright, stop looking so miserable. I'm perfectly fine, aren't I? Not a single hair on my head is missing."
Nora's chest ached with emotion. She knew Sienna was just trying to comfort her.
"So... what's going on with you and Finnian?"
At the mention of his name, Sienna sighed. "I really owe him a massive favor this time... I have no idea when I'll ever be able to pay it off."
Seeing her troubled expression, Nora couldn't help but smile faintly. "I think Finnian is a great guy. You have no idea—when he heard you were in trouble, he sprinted out without even grabbing a coat. He smelled like alcohol too, so he must have been drinking to numb whatever was bothering him..."
Sienna looked deeply conflicted. "I know he's a good person, but I don't love him..."
"Huh?" Nora blinked in confusion. "If you don't like him, then why are you sleeping with him?"
"Because of his face, obviously."
His face was just so painfully identical to Jared Quinn's...
Sometimes, it made her feel like Jared had never left her at all.
Of course, there was another reason she had approached Finnian in the first place, but she couldn't tell Nora that. Nora would absolutely lose her mind.
"Do you really just see him as a surrogate?" Nora found the whole thing a bit unbelievable.
"I know it's wrong, but I can't help it. Every time I look at his face, I feel like Jared is still here... It makes me feel like I can keep surviving..."
"So..." Nora chose her words carefully. "What are you going to do next?"
Sienna let out a long sigh. "What else can I do? I owe him my life now; I can't just turn my back on him. I'll just have to keep giving his sister blood. It's the same deal as always. I give a few ounces of blood, and we sleep together..."
Sienna's voice grew quieter and quieter until it was barely a whisper. Nora was staring at her with a terrifying expression.
Nora usually looked so sweet and delicate, but right now, her eyes were narrowed, giving off a dark, intense pressure that made a chill run down Sienna's spine.
"Nora, don't look at me like that... You're scaring me."
The corners of Hudson's mouth curved up slightly. "Alright. I'll leave him to you. Just don't kill him."
Finnian met his gaze. Their eyes locked in the air for a moment before they both smiled—a silent truce washing away their past enmity.
"By the way," Finnian said, setting down his teacup as if bringing it up casually. "Any news on the search for my sister?"
Hudson leaned back, crossing his long legs, and spoke with maddening calm. "You haven't been able to find her in over twenty years, and you expect me to track her down in twenty days? You give me too much credit, Finnian."
Finnian remained silent. He knew Hudson probably hadn't found any solid leads yet, or else he would have already mentioned it.
Hudson arched an eyebrow. "Speaking of which, I happen to have a question for you. What is the relationship between Felix Vaughn and the Vaughn Family?"
Finnian stiffened noticeably, though he quickly forced his expression back to neutral.
But Hudson simply chuckled and continued on his own. "Looks like my guess was right. There is definitely a connection there."
He set his teacup down, leaning forward slightly, his sharp gaze locking onto Finnian. "I looked into Felix's background. Her social footprint has been wiped completely clean. Not even her residential records exist. Pulling something like that off isn't the work of ordinary people. It has to be top-tier government authorities, right? Add the fact that Felix made a major scientific discovery, and sealing her files makes perfect sense..."
Finnian frowned. "What exactly are you trying to say?"
"Relax. If you really don't want to tell me, I won't force you. I can always just go ask Vincent Vaughn instead."
