"Yeah," Hudson murmured, walking over and pulling her seamlessly into his arms. He rested his chin against the top of her head. The crisp chill of the night air clinging to her clothes mixed with a faint, earthy scent, filling his senses and wrapping around him like a comforting blanket.
Nora was momentarily caught off guard by the embrace, but a soft smile touched her lips as she wrapped her arms around his waist. "What's wrong?"
"I missed you. Just wanted to hold you."
"You're always saying things like that," Nora laughed softly, though she happily buried her face against his chest, gently patting his back.
Hudson knew if he held on much longer, he would only arouse her suspicions.
His Nora had always been far too perceptive.
"Let's eat. Everyone's joining us tonight."
Nora pulled back slightly, tilting her head up with a radiant smile. "Okay."
...
Dinner was much livelier than usual.
It was rare for Liam to stay over for a meal. Embracing the 'more the merrier' spirit, Archer had even driven out to pick up Dr. Silas Vane.
When Silas entered the yard, Bane aggressively barked at him from behind the iron gates of his enclosure. It took a sharp glare from Olive to finally silence the massive dog.
Silas strolled into the living room with his hands clasped behind his back, looking entirely too smug. "Heh, that big beast couldn't bite me today..."
Archer chuckled as he poured him a cup of tea. "Dr. Vane, do you get bitten by dogs often?"
"You have no idea. I've probably had a hundred tetanus shots in my lifetime..."
Olive shot him a teasing grin. "You must have been a butcher in your past life. That's why they hate you."
Silas didn't deny it. He took a sip of his tea and lifted his chin haughtily. "You might not be wrong. Animals sense these things. Just proves I've got a killer aura, hahaha..."
"If you have a killer aura, shouldn't they be running away from you instead of biting you?" Liam raised an eyebrow.
Silas glared at him. "Hey, mind your business... Oh, right..."
As if suddenly remembering something, he dug into his pocket and pulled out a small bottle of pills, tossing it to Liam. "You asked me for those erectile dysfunction pills last time. Here."
"..."
Instantly, the entire dining table went dead silent.
Even Olive, who had been aggressively fishing meat out of the hotpot, froze and looked up in sheer shock.
With a splash, the piece of meat slipped from her chopsticks back into the boiling broth, splashing hot liquid onto her hand. She hissed, shaking off the heat, and stared wide-eyed at Liam. "Damn, Liam, you getting some action?"
Liam: "..."
He was physically sitting at the table, but his soul had already left his body.
Watching Liam look like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole, Nora couldn't help but smile. She gently broke the tension. "The meat is ready, everyone dig in..."
"Oh my god, my meat!" Olive snapped out of her daze and scrambled to retrieve her food.
Archer joined the fray, and the two began loudly bickering over the best cuts of beef, swiftly changing the subject.
The meal carried on in lively spirits.
