The toxic preference for sons.
This patriarchal nightmare had been suffocating her since the day she was born.
No matter how many dance trophies she won, no matter how hard she tried to prove herself, in her mother's eyes, she was nothing but a blood bank for Miles—a disposable tool meant to be sacrificed for her brother.
And her father had always been a coward, blindly obeying her mother.
He had absolutely no voice in the family.
He could only show his affection for Eliza in secret.
So, no matter how deeply resentful and heartbroken she was over her mother's behavior, how could she truly stand by and watch her father die in that hospital bed?
"What happened?"
A low voice suddenly came from behind her.
Eliza stiffened and quickly turned around.
She instantly masked her devastation.
Julian was standing by the sliding glass door, having appeared without a sound.
He was holding a glass of water.
"Nothing," Eliza forced a smile, trying to change the subject.
"Why did you stop eating? Is it... is the hot pot too spicy for you?"
Julian looked at her calmly.
He didn't miss the redness around her eyes, nor did he miss the fragile, shattered look she'd had while leaning over the balcony just moments ago.
But he didn't pry; he simply stepped forward and handed her the glass of warm water.
"No," Julian said softly, watching her wrap her hands around the glass.
"I just can't handle things that are too spicy."
Eliza blinked, her face instantly filling with apology. "I'm so sorry. Gwen and I love our food hot, so we bought the spiciest broth. I didn't realize you couldn't eat it..."
"It's my fault for dropping by unannounced," Julian interrupted her self-blame with a gentle tone.
His gaze locked onto her face as he asked earnestly, "Are you sure you're okay?"
