Left for Dead Came Back for Everything novel Chapter 186

Eliza finally pulled her gaze from the plant and spoke.

"The clerk is waiting for you, and your mother is waiting for you."

Zander gave a hollow nod and pressed the pen down, but—his very first letter warped.

The ink dragged into a jagged, uneven slant, slipping wildly outside the signature box.

He froze.

Squeezed his eyes shut.

And then, pressing down hard, he dragged the pen to painfully carve out the rest of his name.

The clerk pulled the document back, verifying the signatures against their IDs.

"Just a moment, your divorce decrees will be printed shortly."

The printer whirred to life beside her.

Fresh, crisp paper slid out of the tray piece by piece—stamped in bold red ink.

Two separate documents.

One slid to Eliza, the other to Zander.

"The divorce registry is complete. Please keep your respective decrees safe."

Eliza took the official document.

She didn't even bother opening it.

She slid it straight into the side pocket of her canvas tote—nestled right alongside the rest of the documents she had prepped last night.

Clean and utterly ruthlessly efficient.

Like she had just finalized some trivial administrative errand.

She stood up and grabbed her bag.

"Thank you," she offered the clerk a polite nod.

Then she turned on her heel and headed straight for the stairs.

Glancing over her shoulder, she flashed Zander a rare, amicable look. "Thanks for your cooperation."

And with that, she strode smoothly out of the second-floor lobby.

Zander sat frozen at the window, his fingers clamped around his divorce decree.

He couldn't stand up.

He just stared at her retreating back—the ash-gray sweater, the gentle sway of her low ponytail, the canvas strap hitched comfortably over her shoulder, bouncing with every confident step.

She was walking so fast.

Like there was something infinitely more important waiting for her out there.

"Sir?" the clerk's voice broke through the silence. "Do you need copies of your documents?"

Zander looked down.

The official divorce decree rested heavily in his palm, the bold black ink mocking him beneath the harsh fluorescent lights.
