Gwen was still talking animatedly, and Julian listened with a smile, occasionally chiming in.
The atmosphere was lively and comfortable.
Amidst this harmonious vibe, Eliza's phone on the sofa suddenly began to ring.
She paused with her fork, her brow furrowing.
"I need to take this. You guys go ahead and eat!"
She stood up and walked over to the sofa.
Grabbing her phone, Eliza quickly stepped out onto the spacious balcony.
She took a deep breath and swiped to answer.
"Hello, Mom."
"Eliza! Where the hell are you? Hurry up and transfer more money into the hospital account! Your father's bill is due, and the nurses have harassed me three times already. They said if we don't pay today, they're cutting off his medication!"
Her mother's shrill demands made Eliza's frown deepen.
Eliza gripped her phone tighter. "Didn't I just transfer fifteen thousand dollars to you? Even if he's in a VIP suite, it shouldn't cost that much in such a short time!"
"What kind of attitude is that? Are you questioning me?"
Miriam's voice instantly spiked in pitch, and she unleashed a torrent of abuse. "I gave birth to you and raised you, and now that I'm asking you for a little money to keep your own father alive, you're haggling with me?"
"You ungrateful brat. Are you just waiting for your father to die so you can finally shake us off your back?"
Faced with her mother's habitual emotional blackmail and irrational demands, Eliza closed her eyes, swallowing the bitter lump in her throat.
She knew her mother too well; this kind of blustering rage was usually a smokescreen to cover up something shady.
