"What did you just say?" Zander's eyes widened in disbelief, his tone dropping to a dangerous chill.
His predatory gaze made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up.
Yvonne summoned her courage, forcing a sweet smile as her voice grew even softer. "Zander, I said that since you and Eliza are finally over, we can be together openly. I'll take such good care of you. I'll look after Dr. Roth and Eleanor, I'll—"
"Shut up!"
A low, furious roar cut her off.
Zander yanked his hand away so violently that Yvonne lost her balance and stumbled backward onto the floor.
He rose slowly to his feet, glaring down at her with a heavy, somber gaze.
"Yvonne, do you have any idea what you're saying?" The usual warmth and indulgence he reserved for her had vanished completely.
"Do you honestly think I don't know how that sham of a wedding came about?"
"Because of that absolute circus, I hurt Eliza all over again. You made me look like the villain in her eyes!"
Shocked, Yvonne looked up, tears instantly flooding her vision. "Zander, how can you say that? That was our—"
"I said shut up!" Zander bellowed at her for the very first time.
He collapsed back onto the sofa, utterly defeated. After a long silence, his tone shifted to one of exhausted resignation.
"Yvonne, listen to me very carefully. In my heart, you will only ever be a sister to me. A sister I promised your parents I would protect for the rest of my life. That is it."
Sister?
Why was she always just a sister?
Yvonne's eyes burned with fierce resentment and fury.
She had sacrificed so much, endured so much, and waited for so many years. Was this all she got in return? The label of a sister?
It was all that bitch Eliza's fault.
Why hadn't she just died?
