Mentioning her younger son brought Sylvia endless heartbreak.
Hayden lit a cigarette, extending his hand out the window. The smoke drifted away with the light breeze. He didn't take a drag, his expression remaining perfectly stoic, but the corners of his eyes reddened slightly.
Charlesβ
That was the only place in Hayden's heart that still held any warmth.
Hayden finally crushed the cigarette and flicked it into the trash can, letting out a cold scoff.
"Take Lily away? You almost had your bones broken by Zoe today. With the way she is now, are you planning to risk your life fighting her?"
Sylvia was stunned, and after a moment, anger flared up in her again.
"You! You go take Lily. Keep her around as a blood donor for Holden. Just don't let Zoe see her anymore. If you don't even have the capability to do that, what use are you?"
Hayden stared at Sylvia coldly. "False imprisonment is a crime. Leave me out of it."
Sylvia choked on her words, taking a few seconds to finally understand.
"I think you've gone crazy too, actually speaking up for Zoe. Don't tell me you're actually falling for that lunatic. What's wrong with Sienna?
She had a son with your brother, and your brother has been dead for four years. You and Sienna used to date anyway. Keep Lily, tell Zoe to get lost, and marry Sienna. Even Grandmother would support it.
If she disagrees, I'll go talk to her myself. I am your mother, Zoe almost killed me, and you still want her. Are you even my son?"
Sylvia aggressively swept everything off the bedside table onto the floor. Realizing her eldest son's subtle emotional shift toward Zoe, her face twisted in absolute fury.
Hayden let her throw her tantrum. Zoe had been driving him crazy for five years; if he didn't have a strong heart, he truly wouldn't have been able to handle bringing a woman into his home.
He was used to it. Sylvia's little outburst was nothing compared to Zoe's.
He waited until Sylvia had exhausted herself and run out of breath before standing up straight.
You actually let her find an opening. Hayden even talked back to me just to defend her. What are you so busy with? I told you to secure Hayden quickly and get him to divorce Zoe. Look at the time, and there's not a single word of progress. What exactly are you doing?"
Sylvia was at the peak of her anger, so naturally, she didn't mince her words.
She had thought Sienna was capable, but years had passed, and she still hadn't managed to get Zoe thrown out.
Getting beaten up had only plummeted her mood to rock bottom.
Sienna was already frustrated about not being able to see Hayden, and being snapped at by her mother-in-law felt like a heavy stone lodging directly in her chest, nearly suffocating her.
"Hayden hasn't come into work yet. Are he and Zoeβ"
Sienna bit her lip tightly. "Have they been getting close lately?"
Sylvia snapped impatiently, "How should I know if they're close? Aren't you with him every single day? He hasn't returned to the estate in ages. Figure out a way. Tell your so-called sister to get the hell out of Hayden's life right now. Their marriage contract is expiring soon anyway. I'm waiting for your good news."
