Annika’s gaze fixed on the anonymous profile picture—an image of a man and woman’s entangled bodies, suggestive and carnal. She couldn't recall adding anyone like that. Tapping on their profile, she found it completely blank: no information, no pictures, nothing.
Shrugging it off, Annika closed the chat. She sat down in her office chair and began flipping through the documents on her desk.
“Ding!” A new message.
She picked up her phone. This time it wasn't text, but a series of photos. The woman in them had long hair draped over one bare shoulder, her red dress clinging to a curvaceous figure—a pin-up straight out of an adult film.
Annika intended to ignore it and get back to work, but the sender followed up with another line: “Know who she is?”
Driven by curiosity, Annika typed a single question mark. The sender replied with a 'haha' before quickly sending another sentence: “Your father was completely ruined by her.”
Annika stared at the blinking cursor, unable to tear her eyes from the screen. She thought about how the Sargent Group had inexplicably gone downhill, and now this message appeared. Her heart refused to settle. She forced herself to concentrate, but the images and that one sentence—'Your father was completely ruined by her'—kept echoing in her mind, branding themselves onto her heart.
Finally, Annika picked up her phone and quickly typed two questions: What do you mean? Who are you?
Her messages vanished into a digital void, met with complete silence.
...
That afternoon, Conrad called.
Annika answered but said nothing.
After a moment, Conrad spoke first. "I've pulled some strings at the marriage registry. They'll stay open late for us. Get ready, I'm coming to pick you up."
He was bringing up the remarriage again, and he seemed almost urgent.
But for Annika, the impulse she’d felt after his confession had completely vanished. With a clear head, she was considering all the angles.
Did Conrad really like her? She wasn't sure.
After ending the call with Conrad, Annika immediately contacted Wayne. She sent him the photos with a short message: Investigate this woman.
Wayne replied with a simple, “Okay.”
Half an hour later, Wayne entered her office and placed a folder with all the information he’d found in front of her. "Ms. Sargent, the woman's name is Lydia Sutton. She was reportedly an escort at the Celestial Club a few years ago. She's not in that line of work anymore, though. Now she's in marketing."
Annika mulled over the name, her expression thoughtful.
Wayne added, "Mr. Beryl probably knows her. That night in the southern district…"
As if worried Annika wouldn't remember, Wayne specified, "The night I introduced you to Jordan Farley."
At the mention of that night, Wayne's expression turned awkward. It was a taboo subject between them. Annika had never brought it up, but that didn't mean she didn't know. He had deliberately brought her there that night, hoping to use her to curry favor with Jordan.
