As Nolan tried to place the car, a figure emerged from the detention center, and he recognized him immediately: Tyler. Tyler’s suit was wrinkled, his hair a mess, and his face was etched with exhaustion, as if he hadn’t slept all night. He glanced toward the black SUV—Nolan couldn’t tell if he’d seen them—before turning and getting into his own car. The Land Rover made a U-turn and quickly sped past them.

Nolan turned back and saw the dark, menacing look in Conrad’s eyes. He quickly faced forward again, sitting ramrod straight in the driver’s seat, afraid to even breathe. The atmosphere in the car was suffocatingly heavy.

*Bang!* The sound of the car door slamming shut made Nolan jump. He saw Conrad was already out of the car, striding purposefully toward the entrance of the detention center.

“If there’s nothing else, I’ll go back inside,” she said, turning to leave.
