With that, Julian bolted out of the room, even making sure to thoughtfully shut the door behind him.
Stella was speechless.
Now, it was just her and Jarrod left in the private room.
Jarrod still had a vice-like grip on her wrist, his dark eyes fixed intensely on her as if waiting for her to speak.
"Mr. Fuller, you've had too much to drink. Let me help you home to rest first?" Stella asked out of concern.
Jarrod didn't budge. He stared at her for a few more seconds before scoffing and dropping her wrist.
"You're quite something, Mrs. Fuller. You even tracked me down here. Go ahead. What do you want to talk about?"
Jarrod's voice was heavy with alcohol, low and dangerously quiet. Looking at the state he was in, it was obvious he wasn't in any condition to have a rational conversation.
Stella had originally planned to just take him back and wait until he was sober tomorrow to discuss it.
She reached out to help him up again, saying gently, "Let's go home first."
Because Stella had leaned in toward Jarrod, he easily reached up and pinched her chin. The alcohol glazed his eyes, but underneath, there was a freezing cruelty she couldn't decipher.
"What's so hard to say? Are you looking to use another business trip as an excuse to chase after someone else?"
Jarrod's grip was bruising, and Stella winced. She said softly, "Mr. Fuller, you're hurting me."
Looking at Stella's beautiful, delicate face and the calm, submissive expression in her almond eyes, Jarrod was suddenly reminded of the lawn party. He remembered how she had completely abandoned her dignity, sprinting toward the stage and begging that man not to get engaged.
He used to think she was just naturally quiet and indifferent, that even when she was angry, she'd only snap back a little before returning to her usual self.
He never imagined she possessed such a frantic, uncontrollable side.
