Desperate, Stella tried to run forward and explain everything to Logan.
But in her blind panic, she stumbled over her own feet and collapsed right in front of him and the woman!
"Ah!"
Startled, the woman threw her arms tightly around Logan's waist.
Logan instantly shielded her, looking down at the woman sprawled on the floor—
"Who are you, and what do you think you're doing?"
Those expressive eyes, which were always filled with a cynical, teasing warmth, were now ice-cold and heavily guarded. He questioned her as if looking at an intruder he had never met in his life.
The blood in Stella's veins ran cold.
How could Logan look at her with those eyes?
They had grown up together, living in the exact same neighborhood!
Because of her, Logan had given up the chance to go abroad, choosing to repeat his senior year of high school just to stay near her.
They went to the same college, leaning on each other to face the world.
Logan had always said that he knew her better than she knew herself...
Yet right now, he was asking who she was?
Sprawled pathetically on the floor, the stinging pain in her knees and elbows was the only thing tethering Stella to sanity.
She looked up at Logan, desperately searching his face for even a sliver of pretense.
There was none.
Logan's attention was entirely focused on the woman in his arms. He asked her with genuine concern, "Did she scare you?"
"A little," the woman replied softly, leaning heavily against his side. "Logan, let's just go."
"Alright."
Logan wrapped his arm around the woman and walked away, never casting another glance at Stella.
Stella remained frozen on the floor in her collapsed posture.
Her phone seemed to be buzzing frantically in her pocket, but she couldn't hear a thing.
Everything in front of her was blurring into a wash of tears...
...
The weather turned in an instant.
It had been sunny and breezy all day, but by nighttime, it was pouring rain.
Jarrod finished his work close to midnight.
He glanced at his phone. The chat history with Stella still ended with the question mark he had sent hours ago.
