But seeing Stella's absolute resolve, Sebastian feared that pushing the issue would only make her distance herself from him further.

He had no choice but to drop it.

When it was time to clock out that evening, Sebastian stayed behind to tweak a few intricate design details. Since Stella also had some loose ends to tie up, she decided to stay and keep him company.

"We won't go out for dinner tonight, I'll just order something in," Sebastian offered.

Stella laughed. "You're the one pulling overtime, I can't let you pay for dinner too."

Just as she was about to ask what he was in the mood to eat, her phone started ringing.

She glanced at the screen and saw it was Mrs. Whitby.

"Mrs. Whitby, is everything alright?" Stella asked as she picked up.

"Mrs. Fuller, do you have any other plans tonight? Around what time will you be coming home?" the housekeeper asked.

Stella found the question a bit odd. Mrs. Whitby almost never inquired about her schedule. Why the sudden interest today?

Still, she answered honestly, "I have some things to finish up at the factory. I'll be home late."

Mrs. Whitby paused. "Will it be around the same time as yesterday?"

"I'm not sure yet."

There was another slight hesitation before Mrs. Whitby asked, "Have you eaten yet? Should I send some food over for you?"

"No need, I'm going to order something here. I have to go now, talk to you later," Stella said before hanging up.

Sitting nearby, Sebastian had listened to her side of the conversation. He knew immediately that Jarrod had undoubtedly forced the housekeeper to make that call.

The thought dragged Sebastian's mind back to the previous morning.

Julian had called, inviting him to the hospital to help welcome Jarrod upon his discharge, but Sebastian had brushed him off with a work excuse.
