Stella hadn't expected Jarrod to call while she was still on the phone with Cassidy.

Clearly, Chloe had already sprinted to him with her sob story.

She quickly wrapped up her conversation with Cassidy and switched over. "Mr. Fuller. Are you calling to interrogate me about the texts Cassidy sent Director Huxley?"

Stella decided to cut straight to the chase. "She didn't mean any of it maliciously. She was just furious about the completely unjustified transfer and lashed out in the heat of the moment."

Hearing her preemptive defense, Jarrod paused for a second before saying, "If you're free right now, come see me at The Fuller Group."

Seriously? She had to drag herself all the way to headquarters over some petty office squabble?

Chloe was clearly throwing a tantrum in his office, and now he needed her to come do damage control?

Jarrod constantly claimed he only viewed Chloe as a younger sister, but Stella knew he spoiled her far more than he ever did his actual cousin, Serena.

Even if he was just using Chloe as a prop to stir up jealousy, their intimacy crossed every natural boundary of a sibling dynamic.

Stella swallowed the inexplicable, bitter ache in her chest and agreed. "Fine. I'll be there in about half an hour."

She had plenty of time before Summer and Lucca's fifth anniversary party anyway. A quick trip couldn't hurt.

She hadn't done anything wrong, so she had nothing to fear. It was worth it if clearing the air protected Cassidy from corporate retaliation.

Ending the call, Stella stared blankly at the blur of passing trees outside the car window.

Thinking back to her moment of hesitation, a cynical smile tugged at her lips.

George had claimed that men like Jarrod didn't waste their energy on trivial things like romance, and that she should be thrilled he had chosen her for her obedience.

But she was still young. There was absolutely no reason to chain herself to a loveless, convenient marriage for the rest of her life. Building her own empire from scratch would be infinitely more fulfilling.

Half an hour later, Stella stepped into the opulent lobby of The Fuller Group. The executive secretary guided her straight to Jarrod's office.

To her immense surprise, Chloe was nowhere to be seen.
