Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 45

Chapter 45

Seraphina’s POV

When did Mortimer change Vivian’s obnoxious, signature ringtone to the boring default system chime?

No wonder when the phone buzzed, I didn’t even associate it with her name.

And then, Mortimer actually hit the speaker button right in front of me.

In the enclosed space of the estate’s elevator, Vivian’s whiny, delicate voice echoed clearly off the metal walls.

“Morty, the doctor said Rolf can be moved out of the ICU today. I want to go see him. Can you come pick me up?”

I instinctively frowned, only to realize Mortimer was studying my reaction.

He replied coldly to the phone, “I’ll have the driver pick you up.”

A dead silence fell over the line, quickly followed by the sound of deliberately muffled sobbing.

“Morty, you always came personally before. Why… is Seraphina mad at you? It’s all my fault for being so useless, I made you guys fight…”

“Vivian.” Mortimer cut her off, his voice low. A barely noticeable flash of impatience crossed his eyes, his tone carrying a hard warning. “This has nothing to do with her.”

He took a deep breath. “Stop making a scene. The driver will get you there safely.”

“Morty-” Before she could finish her sentence, Mortimer cleanly cut the line.

I was genuinely surprised. He used to cater to Vivian’s every whim, holding her in the palm of his hand like she was made of glass.

Since when did his tone become so blatantly dismissive and disgusted?

But what was the point?

I sighed internally, finding the whole display completely ridiculous.

The elevator settled on the ground floor. The doors opened, and I walked out into the lobby first.

Instead of heading toward the backyard garage, I turned straight toward the estate’s main gates.

Just past the wrought-iron gates was the tree-lined road leading to the pack borders, which was much closer to the taxi stand.

If they wanted to play their messy games, I was more than happy to clear the stage.

Mortimer quickly caught up, blocking my path like a brick wall. “Where are you going?”

“You should just go pick up Miss Davids. I’ll walk and grab a cab.” I tried to step around him, but Mortimer’s hand shot out, clamping down on my arm. He gripped me with terrifying force, squeezing so hard he nearly crushed my wrist.

“Seraphina, do you really have to do this?” Mortimer’s tone was laced with a thin layer of genuine anger.

I looked down at his death grip on my wrist, then met his gaze with total exhaustion. “You heard her yourself. Miss Davis is under a misunderstanding. Her health is fragile, and I don’t want to be the reason she has another ‘accident’.”

I was just so tired.

I absolutely did not want to deal with the inevitable fallout where Vivian’s condition flared up again, and he somehow pinned

the blame on me.
