Chapter 269
Third Person’s POV
Hearing how familiar Caldwell had gotten with Garfield and Thomasina after just one meal made Mortimer even more frustrated.
And what did he mean by “see you tomorrow”? Were they going somewhere together?
Mortimer’s gaze snapped toward Caldwell. As a dominant predator, a flash of territorial hostility crossed his eyes, only to meet Caldwell’s calm, smiling gaze.
“Bye, cus.”
Under Mortimer’s predatory stare, Caldwell gently closed the front door behind him.
Seeing that Mortimer still had no intention of leaving, Garfield and Thomasina exchanged awkward glances. They wanted to send him on his way but felt too embarrassed to say it outright.
In the end, Thomasina broke the silence. “Mortimer, did you come by because you had something to say?
After all, as Seraphina’s parents, there was no real reason for them to keep in close contact with her ex- mate-to-be.
Mortimer fell silent.
After a long pause, he finally answered hoarsely, “The holidays have started, so I thought I’d come by for a visit.”
Mortimer had been a perfect son-in-law.
Every holiday or vacation, he would visit Seraphina’s parents with her.
Even if every gift had been selected by his assistant in advance, Seraphina had always been delighted.
She used to look forward to those occasions, for they were the rare moments when she and Mortimer actually felt like real mates.
But now, when Mortimer visited her parents just as he had every year before, she only felt a sense of absurdity.
Once that excited anticipation for the holidays faded, Mortimer’s gesture just felt entirely unremarkable
“You’re so thoughtful,” Thomasina said gently. “You don’t have to trouble yourself like this anymore.”
Her words were tactful, but the meaning was clear enough: his relationship with Seraphina was coming to an end; there was no need to continue observing these family courtesies.
Mortimer parted his lips, but in the end, he didn’t say anything except a quiet, “Alright.”
With that, he stood from the sofa. “Mr. and Mrs. Hale, I should get going. Sorry for disturbing you today.”
His gaze shifted to Seraphina. “Sera, there’s something important I need to tell you. Would you take a walk downstairs with me?”
After waiting for a while without hearing him speak, Seraphina glanced at him. Seeing his face gradually darken, she instinctively sensed the dangerous, oppressive aura radiating from him.
She figured he was pissed at her for sticking her nose where it didn’t belong, so she said, “Well, it’s only a suggestion. You don’t have to follow it. Besides, I’ve only known Caldwell for about two months, and we haven’t actually spent much time together. If you’re hoping to learn more about him through me, you’re probably gonna be disappointed.”
“No.” Mortimer denied it, his voice rough. “That’s not what I meant.”
His eyes remained fixed on Seraphina. Keeping his jealousy in check, he said in a low voice, “Sera… you need to be careful around Caldwell. He’s not a good guy.”
The moment those words left his mouth, Seraphina’s face darkened.
Even the look in her eyes turned noticeably colder. “Are you talking trash about Caldwell?”
Seeing the displeasure on her face, Mortimer immediately panicked. “Sera, believe me. He definitely has ulterior motives for staying by your side. I’m afraid he’ll hurt you.”
“Enough, Mortimer,” she cut him off with irritation.
Whatever patience she’d had for him earlier was completely gone. “I don’t know whether he would hurt me, but I do know one thing-he saved my life. That’s a fact. I’m not going to assume the worst of my savior.”
She looked at Mortimer icily. “I’ve never spoken badly about your savior. I’d appreciate it if you showed some respect for mine.”
“Sera, I wasn’t…”
