Chapter 141
Third Person’s POV
Humphrey gasped so hard he nearly dropped to his knees right there on the sidewalk.
He lunged forward, clapping a hand over Alina’s mouth while winking at her like a lunatic. “Babe! Are you crazy?! How can you talk to Mortimer like that?!”
Alina shoved his hand away and shrugged, looking completely innocent. “What? Did I say something wrong?”
Humphrey was speechless.
Damn it, why did it feel like his girlfriend was throwing pure shade with every single word tonight?
“Fine, fine. My bad.”
Alina rolled her eyes, her face tight with a completely fake, plastic smile. “Miss Davids probably thought she was the actual Luna and forgot that Seraphina is the one legally bonded to Alpha Mortimer.”
She crossed her arms, staring right at Mortimer’s rigid, pale face, enjoying the kill. “Mortimer must be absolutely heartbroken right now, huh? Watching his ‘sweetheart’ sitting behind bars in a prison jumpsuit. I bet you’re so upset tonight you won’t even be able to-”
Before she could finish, a panicked Humphrey practically tackled her, dragging her toward the Rolls-Royce and shoving her into the driver’s seat.
“Moon Goddess above! Just drive away! Please, I’m begging you!”
Alina rolled her eyes into the back of her skull.
She muttered a quiet “dumbass” under her breath, slammed her high heels onto the gas pedal, and hit the road.
The engine roared, and the million-dollar car sped away into the dark.
Humphrey watched the red taillights vanish, wiping the cold sweat off his forehead.
He muttered to himself, “What the hell is wrong with her tonight? Since when is she this brave?”
He turned around, slowly shuffling back over to Mortimer.
“Morty…”
The second he opened his mouth, the words froze.
Under the pale moonlight, Mortimer’s eyes were bloodshot, staring right through him without blinking.
His gaze was cold, hollow, and radiating the unstable, chaotic aura of an Alpha on the verge of a total breakdown.
“Mortimer, why… why are you looking at me like that?” Humphrey swallowed hard, taking a step back. “What’s wrong with your eyes? Did you get an infection or something? Why are they so red?”
A heavy, dead silence stretched out between them.
It took a full thirty seconds before Mortimer finally spoke, his voice sounding dry and rough, like sand scraping against gravel.” Does everyone… think I treat Vivian too well?”
“Well, duh!” Humphrey blurted out, acting like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Mortimer, your favoritism for Vivian is legendary. Everyone can see it. What happened? Did Vivian pick a fight with you?”
Mortimer felt like he’d been choked.

His jaw line was locked tight, his chest heaving as he struggled to find a single word to push back.
“But seriously, whoever called the cops on Viviis a total savage,” Humphrey rattled on, completely oblivious to the fact that his friend was about to explode “I heard someone filmed her getting dragged away by the police and posted it online. Talk about embarrassing.”
Mortimer couldn’t listen to another syllable.
He had never realized Humphrey’s brain could be this brain-dead.
He whipped around, threw the car door open, and climbed into the driver’s seat without a word.
“Hey! Mortimer! Wait up, I’m coming with you!”
Humphrey moved fast, grabbing the passenger handle of the Bentley and hopping in before Mortimer could lock him out.
As he buckled his seatbelt, he tried to crack a joke to ease the tension. “Doesn’t George usually drive you around? Did he take the night off? Why are you playing chauffeur tonight?”
Mortimer kept his eyes down, his face dark with a heavy, dangerous mix of rage and anxiety.
Humphrey just assumed his buddy was still stressing over Vivian, so he let out a sympathetic sigh.
He leaned back, putting on his best ‘relationship expert’ voice. “Look, Morty, if you’re still worried about Vivian, I think you’re overreacting. It’s not like she committed a real felony. She just posted a video that caused a little misunderstanding for Luna Seraphina, and everything’s already cleared up online, right?”
Mortimer’s knuckles turned bone-white against the leather steering wheel.
Every. Single. Word.
Every sentence out of Humphrey’s mouth felt like a physical slap across his face.
It turned out that in the eyes of everyone else, his past actions were nothing but a shameless, toxic defense of Vivian-a total betrayal that dragged Seraphina’s dignity through the mud.
And he was only realizing it now, getting his karma way too late.
Humphrey kept rambling from the passenger seat, completely blind to the storm brewing next to him.
“Besides, Seraphina used to be great at seeing the bigger picture when she was with the pack. You’re the Alpha. Just give the order, and she’ll drop it to save your face. She won’t actually go after Vivian.”
He shrugged, totally relaxed. “And with the Blades’ power, bailing Vivian out is a piece of cake anyway. Even if Seraphina is holding a grudge, her family’s been out of the picture for years. It’s not like she’d actually dare to tear up her contract with you in public.”
“Humphrey,” Mortimer growled, spitting out the name through clenched teeth.
The man in the passenger seat jumped, his spine instantly locking up. He looked over, met Mortimer’s bloodshot, wild eyes which looked ready to shred him to pieces on the spot-and shut his mouth instantly.
What… what did he say wrong?
He was literally trying to help him fix his life, so why did this guy look like he was about to shift and murder him?
ค.
