For a moment, I found myself wondering why everyone had seemed so tense.

Then a woman seated farther down the table spoke.

“I have a concern about the training.”

Caleb stopped.

Jason looked toward her.

“What concern?”

She hesitated briefly before answering.

“In my opinion, the training is beginning to take a turn in some areas.”

The room became quieter.

She continued carefully.

“Especially with the children.”

I frowned slightly.

“Some of them are simply too young for the level of training they are being subjected to,” she said.

I remembered the training ground from the previous night.

I had seen children there.

At the time, I had assumed that perhaps they were older than they appeared or that the training was lighter than what I had witnessed from a distance. I had even approved of the idea.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

The woman continued.

“I understand why we are preparing. I understand the threat we are facing. But some of these children are still too young to be pushed this hard.”

My father nodded.

“I agree.”

Jason looked toward him.

My father leaned forward slightly.

“If a pack like North Ridge is threatening war, and all Silver Hollow has are a few competent warriors, exhausted children, and elders who are barely capable of defending themselves, then we have a serious problem.”

His words carried more weight than the woman’s concern had.

I looked at him.

He wasn’t exaggerating.

My father had always been careful with his words during council meetings, especially when discussing matters that affected the entire pack.

If he was saying there was a problem, then there was one.

Jason responded almost immediately.

“There are enough trained warriors.”

His voice was firm.

“North Ridge is not some invincible pack.”

Jason looked around the table.

“And we shouldn’t behave as though they are.”

No one interrupted him.

“The regional council has no reason to support Conrad by getting involved. That means we are not preparing to fight some coalition of packs.”

He paused.

“We would be dealing with North Ridge alone.”

His expression remained confident.

“There will be no interference,” Jason said.

I watched my father carefully.

He didn’t look convinced.

Jason continued.

“We have trained warriors. We have defenses. We have increased security. We are preparing our civilians so they can protect themselves if necessary. That does not mean we intend to send children to war.”

The woman who had raised the concern lowered her gaze slightly.

“I understand that, Alpha Jason.”

Jason nodded.

“Then we should keep that distinction clear.”
