The seriousness that usually accompanied a council meeting settled over the room. Conversations died down, chairs were adjusted, and everyone turned their attention toward

Jason.

He remained seated at the head of the table, his hands resting calmly in front of him as he

looked around at the council members.

I also kept my attention on him. There was something different about seeing him in this

position now.

I had known Jason before the title had become something that seemed to define every part of him. We both used to be members of the council, but this would be the first time I was sitting across from him while he sat at the head as the Alpha. That made me realize just how much had changed.

He no longer looked like the young heir I remembered.

He looked like a man carrying the weight of an entire pack on his shoulders.

Jason finally spoke.

“Following the last letter we received, I sent our response as agreed.”

Everyone remained silent.

“I made it clear that Silver Hollow was willing to discuss the situation directly. However, the request for a one-on-one discussion was declined.”

A few of the elders exchanged looks.

I remained quiet.

I had no idea what the previous letter had contained, but from Jason’s words, I could tell how bad it was that whatever discussion he had hoped to have had not happened.

Jason continued.

“Since that option is no longer available, I believe it is in the best interest of Silver Hollow to prepare as though we have no other option but to defend ourselves.”

His voice remained steady.

“We cannot afford to assume that the situation will resolve itself simply because we would prefer it to.”

I noticed my father’s expression become more serious.

Jason leaned back slightly.

“Silver Hollow has never been known for failure. Not from the beginning, and certainly not now.”

His gaze moved around the table.

“We have never been a pack that runs from a challenge, and we have never been cowards.”

There was quiet agreement around the table.

“Whatever Conrad or anyone else intends to bring to our doorstep, we will be prepared to meet it.”
