Chapter 629

PAYE

I was halfway through my meal when my mother came back into the room carrying another dish.

She placed it on the table and looked at my plate.

Do you need more?

I smiled and shook my head. No, Mom. I’ve already had enough.”

She looked unconvinced.

You barely ate.

I’ve eaten enough,I said.

She gave me the familiar look that told me she was considering arguing, but she eventually let it go

and sat down beside me.

I took another bite and smiled.

I really missed your cooking.

My mother smiled. I thought you would.

I don’t think I’ve had anything this good in a long time,I added.

You’re exaggerating.

I’m not.I shook my head. I really missed this. I missed having you cook for me.

She watched me for a moment with a soft smile.

I’m glad you’re home.

I smiled back.

For a while, we simply talked about small things. She asked about my journey, and I told her it had

been fine. I told her about some of the things I had been enjoying in Blood Crescent, and she listened with the kind of interest only a mother could have.

Eventually, her questions shifted.

And how is Alexander?

I looked at her.

He is fine.

Couples 629 She smiled.

Does he treat you well?my mother asked.

The question was so warm and sincere that I smiled immediately.

He does.

My mother nodded.

You know, the last time you and Alexander visited, there wasn’t really any time for me to ask your things like this.

I know.

She reached across the table and adjusted something on my plate that didn’t actually need adjusting.

So, tell me. How is life with him?

I smiled.

It’s good,I said simply.

Just good?

I laughed. Mom.

I’m just asking.

I shook my head, still smiling.

He’s very good to me. Alexander takes care of me in every way. He can be difficult sometimes, but most of the time, he listens to me, he respects me, and he makes sure I’m comfortable.

My mother’s expression softened.

He makes me happy.

She nodded approvingly before asking another question.

And you love him?

I didn’t hesitate.

I do.

There was a brief silence before my mother asked, almost casually, Then why aren’t you pregnant yet?

froze

Mr & Mrs Ayaz AlAdded a post. I never knew a girt’s own home could teat

Then I cleared my throat and reached for my glass of water. I took a slow drink before putting it buck down.

I couldn’t say I was surprised. If anything, I would have been more surprised if my mother had never asked me that question. She had never been the type to dance around subjects simply because they were uncomfortable.

Still, that didn’t make it any easier to answer. Because at the end of the day, she was going to have a problem with whatever explanation I gave.

We’re not in a hurry for that,I said carefully. We’ll have a child when it happens. It’s not something we’re particularly concerned about right now.

My mother’s expression changed. She looked disappointed.

Faye.

I knew that tone.

Yes, Mom

What has come over you? I didn’t raise you to think like that, she said.

I frowned slightly.

She continued calmly.

You are mated to an Alpha, for goodnesssake. Not just any Alpha. Alexander Blackwell, the Alpha of Blood Crescent, she said. Is that alliance a joke to you?

I remained silent because I didn’t want to interrupt.

The most important thing you should have had in mind from the beginning of this alliance was giving him an heir. I thought you knew that,my mother went on.

Mom, that’s

That should have been your number one priority.

I put my fork down.

She wasn’t angry, but there was a seriousness in her voice that made it clear she meant every

word.

Of course Alexander won’t pressure you if he believes it would affect you negatively, she continued. He loves you. I know that much from what you’ve told me, but he still needs a

successor.

Hooked away.

And if you don’t give him one, he can eventually get one elsewhereMaybe he already did. That

would explain why he’s not concerned.

I immediately looked back at her.

Alexander wouldn’t do that.

She smirked. “Perhaps not now.

Her words unsettled me.

But you have to understand that someone like him cannot simply ignore the question of súccession forever. If you don’t give him an heir, another woman could eventually give him one. Then where would that leave you?

I frowned.

The alliance would be in the mud. And you? You’ll lose everything. The mother of his heir gets

everything.”

I don’t care about his wealth or his inheritance, Mom,I said, a little offended.

I didn’t say you did.

I chuckled dryly. That’s what it sounds like.

My mother sighed.

I’m trying to make you understand the position you’re in.

I understand what you mean. I understand my duty, and I know the importance of the alliance. That’s why I accepted him as my mate. But it’s certainly not going to be the reason I would have a child with him.
