I arrived at the pack house a few minutes later. I knew my family no longer lived in our family house. The invasion that happened during my last visit had left enough damage behind that my parents had moved into the pack house instead.

I turned off the engine and sat for a moment before finally opening the door.

had barely stepped out of the car when I noticed Jason walking in my direction. He didn’t

notice me.

He was talking casually and laughing with someone beside him… A woman.

There was something about the way they interacted that made me pause.

They seemed unusually comfortable with each other. Too comfortable, perhaps.

Jason leaned slightly toward her as she said something, and she laughed, touching his arm briefly before pulling her hand away.

She looked familiar.

I watched her for a moment, trying to place her face. There was something about her that I recognized, but she looked so different from the way I remembered her that it took me a moment to figure it out.

She looked like one of the girls who worked in the pack house when I was still living in Silver Hollow. I had probably seen her around the house several times.

But she certainly didn’t look like a servant anymore.

I brushed it off. It was none of my business. I closed my car door and started walking toward

the house.

Jason noticed me as I got closer.

His conversation with the woman came to an end, and the two of them turned toward me as I approached.

“Alpha Jason,” I greeted politely, making sure I sounded as formal as possible.

Jason smiled.

There was something about the smile that caught my attention. It was a little too prepared, almost as though he had been practicing for the moment he would finally see me again.

I ignored the thought.

“I… We have been expecting you,” he said.

I smiled politely.

“Thank you for having me.”

Jason’s expression softened even more.

“Don’t be like that, Faye. This is your home. You’re not a guest here.”

I nodded. “I know.”

The woman stepped forward before I could say anything else.

“Faye! It’s so good to see you,” she said.

Her tone was far more familiar than I expected.

She smiled brightly and extended her hand toward me. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe she’s someone I used to be friends with or work with.

I stared at her hand for a moment before looking back at her face.

“Sorry, you look familiar, but I can’t remember,” I said, trying to be polite.

“I’m Alice,” she said.

There was nothing particularly wrong with the gesture, but something about the way she approached me felt strange. Perhaps it was simply the excessive familiarity.

Even if I had seen her around before, I could barely remember ever speaking to her when I lived here, so I wasn’t sure why she was acting as though we had always been close.

I didn’t take her hand.

Instead, I simply acknowledged her with a small smile.

“Hello, Alice,” I said.

Jason cleared his throat.

Alice’s hand slowly lowered. I turned my attention back to Jason.

“Where’s my sister?”

Jason glanced toward the house.

“Sage should be somewhere inside.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Should be?”

He shrugged casually.

“She’s definitely around.”

I looked between him and Alice for a moment. There was definitely something strange going on here.

I wasn’t sure what it was, and frankly, I didn’t want to find out.

Whatever weirdness was happening between those two, I had no intention of letting it spread

to me.

I gave Jason a polite smile.

“Alright. I’ll go find her.”

Then I walked toward the house before either of them could say anything else.

I had barely stepped inside the house when, almost as if she had been waiting for me, I saw Sage coming down the stairs. She stopped the moment she saw me, and for a second, we simply stared at each other.

Then her face lit up, and she hurried down the remaining steps before throwing her arms around me. I laughed as I hugged her back. The greeting was a little too dramatic, but I wasn’t complaining.

“I thought you had changed your mind,” she said, pulling back just enough to look at me. “Why would I do that?” I asked.

“I don’t know. You didn’t call to say you were coming today.”

I smiled. “It was supposed to be a surprise.”

Sage stared at me for a moment before shaking her head. “You should have told me you were coming today. I would have made sure I was ready to receive you properly.”

“You seem to be doing a pretty good job of receiving me now,” I said.

She laughed.

I looked past her toward the rest of the house before turning back to her. “How are Mom and

Dad?”

Sage’s expression softened. “They’re fine.”

“Where are they?”

“They’re around, but you should settle in first before you talk about going to see them,” Sage said. “You just drove all the way here. Go freshen up, eat something, and then you can go surprise them.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Surprise them?”

“Yes. They don’t know you’re coming either.”

That made me smile. “Alright.”

Sage looked satisfied with herself before glancing toward the entrance. “Where are your things?”

“In the car,” I said.

“Then stay here. I’ll get someone to bring them in.” She looked around and spotted someone nearby.

“You,” she called, motioning him over. “Please help bring Faye’s things in from the car.”

The man nodded and started toward the entrance.

I glanced toward the car and then turned to follow him. Sage looked at me in confusion. “What are you doing?”

“I’m going with him.”

“You don’t have to,” Sage said.
