The moment I drove into Silver Hollow territory, I noticed that something was different.

The border was much more heavily guarded than I remembered. There were more security posts along the main road, and I had already passed three of them before reaching the final checkpoint near the pack house.

I slowed down as I approached each one, lowering my window whenever I was stopped. I never had any trouble getting through. The moment the guards recognized me, their expressions would change. Those who had served under me when I was still the head warrior would straighten and give me a respectful salute before allowing me to pass. I always returned the gesture with a smile before driving on.

Still, I couldn’t help wondering what had prompted all the extra security. I had spent most of my life in Silver Hollow before leaving for Blood Crescent, and I didn’t remember the borders ever being this heavily monitored… Not even the last time I was here. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. If anything, it meant Jason was taking security seriously. I simply found the change interesting.

By the time I reached the last checkpoint, I was expecting another quick stop. Instead, the guard approached my car and motioned for me to lower the window, which I did.

“Name and reason for entering the territory, please.”

I blinked. I had to admit, I hadn’t expected that.

I explained that I was from Silver Hollow and was actually here on a visit.

The guard looked at me through the window and frowned. “I asked for your name?”

I almost laughed at the tone he used.

Before I could answer, someone approached from a short distance away.

“Delta.”

I turned toward the familiar voice and immediately smiled when I saw Caleb walking toward me. He stopped beside the car and looked at me for a moment before his expression

brightened.

“Luna Faye,” he corrected himself quickly.

I laughed.

“Old habits,” he added with a sheepish smile.

“I know.” I opened the door and stepped out of the car, and Caleb immediately turned toward the guard.

“This is Faye, former Delta of Silver Hollow and now Luna of Blood Crescent. She’s not a stranger.”

The guard’s expression changed immediately.

“I’m sorry about that,” the guard said.

I waved a hand dismissively. “It’s fine.”

Caleb gave him another look, clearly not satisfied. “Apologize properly.”

The guard straightened. “I apologize, Luna.”

I smiled. “Accepted.”

I took off my sunglasses and held them loosely in one hand while I looked around the checkpoint. The guard glanced at me again, and this time, he seemed to actually look at my face. I noticed the brief change in his expression, almost as though he had only just realized who I was.

Or perhaps he had noticed the resemblance. I had seen that look before. No matter the hairstyle or makeup we chose to go with, Sage and I always looked enough alike that people who knew one of us usually had little trouble recognizing the other. The guard said nothing about it, though, and I didn’t bring it up.

Caleb shook his head. “He’s a new recruit.”

“I figured,” I simply said.

“He hasn’t been here long enough to know everyone yet,” Caleb added.

I nodded. “That’s understandable.”

I turned toward the guard again and smiled. “Don’t worry about it. You were only doing your job.”

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

Caleb looked at me again. “It’s good to see you.”

“It’s good to see you too, Caleb.”

He glanced toward my car. “So, how was the trip?”

“Fine. Long, but fine.”

I glanced around again. The extra guards were still bothering my curiosity, so I finally asked, “So, what’s going on?”

Caleb raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” he asked, looking genuinely lost.

I gestured vaguely toward the checkpoint. “All of this. I’ve passed three security stops since I entered the territory. I don’t remember Silver Hollow being this heavily guarded before.”

Caleb smiled casually. “It’s one of Alpha Jason’s latest ideas. He wants to keep security in a good place.”
