Truth be told, Taylor wasn’t scared of causing a scene; he was terrified she might just give up on everything completely.
Once work was sorted, Leonora took a breather at home for a day and then joined her parents at school on Monday. With her prior work experience and her parents being well-respected teachers—her dad, Devon, had recently been promoted to Dean of Academic Affairs—her onboarding was a breeze.
She got into the swing of things quickly, diving into real work on her very first day and lending a hand to her colleagues. Growing up with teachers as parents, she was already familiar with the system.
Leonora’s competence had the school’s administration beaming. They praised Devon and Shania for raising such a capable daughter, saying the couple had nurtured yet another talent for the school and that Devon should have brought Leonora on board much sooner.
The school leaders' approval and compliments about Leonora’s work ethic made Devon glow with pride.
While some folks celebrated, others worried.
When Blake heard Leonora had started working at the school, a cold sweat broke out on his forehead. “Arielle, she’s too efficient. How did she land a job at the school so fast, leaving us no time to prepare?”
Mr. Taylor’s reaction to the news was anyone’s guess, but Blake could only imagine the fury. Despite the sense of impending doom and dreading Taylor's inevitable displeasure, Blake still knocked on Taylor’s office door. The longer he delayed reporting, the worse Taylor’s temper would be.
Seizing the moment while Leonora was still in her probationary period, Blake aimed to get her back in the office.
Entering the office, Blake cautiously said, “Mr. Taylor, Ms. Arielle hasn’t been in the office these past few days.”
Taylor hummed in acknowledgment without lifting his head. He was already aware of Leonora’s absence, having agreed to her taking some time off.
Seeing Taylor’s lack of reaction, Blake continued, “Ms. Arielle has started working at her parents’ school, in the administrative office.”
At that, Taylor’s actions halted, and his expression darkened. He had told Leonora to take some time off if she felt down, to rest at home. He never thought she would so quickly choose another job, eager to sever ties with Ferguson Group and with him.
Observing Taylor’s grim expression, Blake grew anxious. As Taylor coldly slapped the documents down on his desk, Blake tentatively asked, “Mr. Taylor, should I head over to the school?”
The suggestion was clear; he could make things difficult for Leonora at the school, forcing her to return to the company.
After a moment of thought, Taylor rubbed his temples and then said, “Let it be. If she wants to change her work environment, let her.”
Remembering Leonora’s recent defiance, her willingness to risk everything to break up with him, Taylor couldn’t bear the thought of pushing her further away, fearing she might take drastic measures. Moreover, with Grant still at the company and occasionally seeking Leonora out, she might have chosen to leave to avoid such complications, having previously mentioned resigning.
