Glancing down, Leonora noticed an unfamiliar number flashing on her phone.
Even so, she decided to answer.
"Hello, this is Leonora," she said politely.
On the other end, there was only the sound of heavy breathing. Whoever it was didn’t respond.
Standing by the dessert table, Leonora tried again, "Hello?"
Joselyn, noticing Leonora’s odd phone call, looked up with curiosity.
"Wrong number, maybe?" Leonora speculated. "If you’ve dialed the wrong number, I’m going to hang up now."
Just as she was about to disconnect, a man's voice suddenly broke through: "Arielle."
Hearing the name "Arielle," Leonora paused, confused.
Regaining her composure, she asked, "May I know who's calling?"
Silence. Then, indistinct voices in the background before the call abruptly ended.
The sudden start and end of the call left Leonora bewildered. She stared at her phone for a moment, then set it down on the table, her mood noticeably dampened.
Seeing the change in Leonora’s expression, Joselyn asked, "What's wrong, Arielle? Who was that?"
Leonora looked up, "Probably a wrong number," she dismissed before changing the subject.
That weekend, Taylor didn’t reach out, giving Leonora a rare, relaxed break for two days.
It wasn’t until Tuesday afternoon, as Leonora was leaving work, that Taylor’s Maybach blocked her path at the company's entrance. "Get in," he said.
Hearing Taylor's familiar voice and seeing his unguarded appearance made Leonora’s heart flutter.
Frowning, she asked, "Taylor, what are you doing? We’re right in front of the company."
They had agreed to keep their relationship a secret, especially at work. Pretend not to know each other. Yet here he was, picking her up at the main entrance.
Usually, Mr. Lee, their driver, knew to pick her up from a more secluded spot.
Taylor's apparent disregard for their agreement irked Leonora. He didn’t seem to mind, but she didn’t want their relationship to be public, fearing judgment.
But Taylor didn’t argue. Instead, he reminded her, "Arielle, if you don’t get in now, someone might notice."
Taking his advice, she quickly got into the car, closing the windows to avoid being seen.
Taylor, though visibly annoyed by her sneakiness, chose not to make a big deal out of it. After all, he was the one who insisted on secrecy and was significantly older than her.
As the car started moving, Taylor glanced at Leonora, "Do you act this cautious around Grant too? Do you treat him like a stranger?"
For some reason, Taylor couldn't help but compare himself to Grant, curious about how Leonora's relationship with him had been.
