So there they were, the family of three, stuck together like an Oreo, with Isaac giggling in the middle like he'd just heard the funniest joke.
Estrella, caught between laughter and tears, felt like she'd somehow birthed a goofball.
When Autumn emerged from the kitchen with dinner, seeing Estrella in Jason's arms, she teased, "Estrella, aren't you a little too old to be competing with Isaac for cuddles?"
With Erik expecting and Jason back, Estrella was riding a high, playfully retorting, "Mom, are you just jealous 'cause I've got someone to hold me? Dad's right there for you."
Autumn rolled her eyes at Estrella's bragging, warning, "Keep it up, and I might just 'forget' to keep your birth certificate updated. Let’s see you swagger then."
Estrella pleaded, "Oh, come on, Mom! Don't be like that!"
Jason chimed in, "Mom, anything but that. You know how hard we've worked to get on Grandpa's good side, especially with the birth certificate stuff."
Autumn, having them right where she wanted, smirked, "Not so cocky now, huh? Changed your mind about making your dad hug me?"
Estrella fell silent, her sass momentarily deflated.
Kristin, always quick to hold a grudge – wonder where she gets that from?
Amid Estrella and Autumn's playful bickering, Isaac, caught in the middle, giggled away. To him, this was better than any cartoon, a live comedy show featuring his favorite stars.
Isaac wasn't much of a talker, but he found joy in the chaos of arguments, a trait he'd inherited from Estrella who, as a child, would pull up a chair to watch neighborhood spats with the seriousness of a judge.
Then, Cole came downstairs, finding his family in a tangled mess of affection and teasing, too amused and exasperated to intervene. "Adults?" he thought, "More like oversized kids."
Eventually, the call to dinner broke the spell, and after a spirited meal, Autumn skillfully escorted Isaac off to bed, leaving the adults to themselves.
