Memories rushed back like a tidal wave as Erik spoke, "I was only 14 at the time, and Damita had a daughter of her own. How could she do something like that?"
After Erik finished, Bryce hugged her tightly and kissed her head. "Erik, it's all in the past now. No one will dare hurt you again."
Bryce was determined to get to the bottom of it and seek justice for Erik.
"Mhm!" Erik nodded, feeling a sense of safety in Bryce's strong embrace.
Soon, Erik fell asleep, comforted by Bryce's presence, but Bryce couldn't sleep. His mind kept replaying Erik's words, struggling to imagine her helplessness back then.
She must have been so scared, crying her heart out.
Thankfully, Estrella had arrived just in time to protect Erik.
Looking down at Erik in his arms, Bryce held her even tighter, afraid she might be taken away or hurt if he let go.
Bryce and Estrella had always been protective of Erik, but hearing about her ordeal only deepened Bryce's concern.
The next day, as they headed to work, Bryce couldn't stop himself from calling Erik every few minutes, checking in on her whereabouts and activities.
He had confronted Damita a few days ago and feared she might try something against Erik again.
At lunch, after what felt like the hundredth phone call, Erik finally snapped, "Bryce, I'm almost 27 now. I'm not so easily kidnapped. Stop calling me."
Even though Bryce didn't explain his reason for the calls, Erik understood his fears, rooted in her story from the night before.
"Who knows if your stepmom is a psycho or not, but I'll call you back later," Bryce said.
Erik sighed, wishing she hadn't shared her troubles with him, yet a smile crept onto her face.
So this is what it feels like to be cared for.
...
That evening, at the Dorvold family home.
Cole had come home early, so Estrella and Isaac were both there for dinner.
