Seraphina suddenly smiled.
"You're asking me what I said to her? Why don't you ask her what she did?"
Dominic's frown deepened.
Cynthia stepped forward, gently resting her hand on Dominic's arm, her voice as soft as silk. "Dominic, don't be angry. Sera probably didn't mean to..."
Seraphina's gaze dropped straight to Cynthia's hand resting on Dominic's arm.
"Your daughter was over here kicking a cat. After kicking it once, she tried to kick it a second time."
"I stopped her and told her she couldn't do that. She started crying, called me mean, and said she didn't love me anymore."
Seraphina finished her sentence, staring at Dominic, waiting for his reaction.
Dominic's brow creased even tighter, but his expression hardly shifted. If anything, a flash of impatience crossed his eyes.
"That's it?" His voice was deadpan. "It's just a cat. She's a child and doesn't know any better. Do you really need to be this harsh on her?"
Seraphina took a deep breath.
"Fine, it's just a cat. Then let me ask you this. You two adults went to order food together, leaving a five-year-old child entirely alone. She ran over to a tall shelf to grab a book, couldn't reach it, and then took her anger out on a creature smaller and weaker than her—did you ever stop to think about that?"
Dominic's face darkened.
"What are you trying to say?"
"What I'm trying to say is," Seraphina stared directly into his eyes, "the two of you are so inseparable you couldn't bear to be apart for a single minute, leaving a five-year-old to run around unsupervised. She couldn't reach the bookshelf, she couldn't get what she wanted, and she didn't know how to handle it, so she vented her frustration by kicking an innocent cat. Have you ever considered whose fault that is?"
Cynthia's face paled.
"Sera, are you blaming us? Dominic and I just went to order, we never thought Lily would wander off on her own..."
Seraphina didn't even look at her; her eyes remained fixed on Dominic.
Dominic's thin lips pressed together before he let out a scoff.
