But she didn't cry. Instead, she forcefully wrenched her hand out of Seraphina's grip, lifting her chin defiantly.
"It was in my way! This stupid cat blocked my path! I couldn't even reach my comic book! It's a bad cat! It deserves to be hit!"
Saying that, she raised her foot again, trying to kick the kitten.
Seraphina yanked her back, her grip much tighter than before.
"No. You cannot do that."
Lily struggled a few times. Realizing she couldn't break free, her tears finally spilled over.
She cried loudly, looking utterly wronged, acting as if she were the victim.
"Let go of me! You're mean!" she wailed between sobs. "You're helping a bad cat instead of me! You're a bad mom! I hate you! I don't love you anymore!"
The surrounding guests threw judgmental glances their way. Some frowned, some shook their heads, and others whispered among themselves.
Seraphina remained crouched in front of her daughter, her hand still locked around her wrist, staring unblinkingly at the red, tear-streaked little face.
Her heart felt as if an invisible hand were crushing it, the pain so intense she could barely breathe.
But she didn't let go, nor did she back down.
"If you can't reach it, you ask an adult for help."
"The cat wasn't blocking you; you just aren't tall enough. And even if the cat was in your way, you do not kick it."
Lily froze for a second, her crying quieting slightly. "You're just mean! You're just mean! I won't listen! I won't listen!"
She shook her arm violently, trying to shake Seraphina off.
Seraphina looked at her daughter, a massive lump forming in her throat.
She wanted to say, *I taught you better than this. You never bully animals, have you forgotten?*
But she said nothing.
Because she knew it was utterly pointless.
Her daughter wouldn't listen.
Her daughter only thought she was mean, thought she was annoying, thought she was worse than everyone else.
Still, Seraphina didn't loosen her grip. She only let out a deep breath and released Lily once she saw the kitten scamper safely away.
Lily immediately scrambled two steps backward. Clenching her hands into little fists, she glared at Seraphina with a tear-stained face.
