She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but it felt like a lump was caught in her throat.
Six years had passed, and Julian was exactly the same.
Blunt and straightforward.
"Julian." Her voice was slightly raspy. "It's been a long time."
Seeing her smile, Julian's eyes also grew a bit misty. He pushed his glasses up his nose, forcing the emotion down.
"What are you standing there for? Sit." He turned and walked back to the booth, patting the seat next to him. "Come on, sit here. Tell me how you've been all these years."
Seraphina sat down across from him and placed her bag by her side.
Julian poured her a cup of tea.
"When the Professor told us last night that you were joining the project, the entire research group went absolutely crazy."
"You have no idea. The Professor never says it out loud, but we all know he's been thinking about you this whole time. Every time the team went out for dinner, he'd always mutter about how he wished you were there."
Seraphina looked down, remaining silent.
Professor Vane had stopped taking students a long time ago, but he made a special exception for Seraphina. She was, in the truest sense, his very last protégé.
"And the rest of the team? When they heard you were coming back, the group chat practically exploded."
Julian pulled out his phone, opened a chat, and pushed it across the table for her to see. "Look at this. We were talking until two in the morning last night, and it was all about you."
Seraphina glanced down at the screen. The messages were scrolling up rapidly.
"Sera is coming back? Are you serious?"
"Finally! Our star player is returning to the squad!"
"It's been six years. The Professor has been talking about her for six years, and we finally got her back."
