Chapter 219
Cynthia sat on the bed feeling less of the person she had felt like before Sebastien returned. That always happened. Before he came in, she could convince herself she was clever, dangerous, desirable, one step away from power. After he was done with her, she felt stripped of all the lies she used to hold herself upright. She felt small. Dirty. Used. But the worst part was that she knew she had
caused part of it. That thought made the shame harder to escape.
He used to adore her.
That memory hurt more than the slap sometimes. Sebastien had genuinely loved her once. He had looked at her like she was his future, not his burden. He had touched her like she was precious, not like something he wanted to punish himself with. He had trusted her. Maybe that was the thing neither of them could recover from. She had broken his trust before he could build a life for them, and when his brother rejected her too, she lost on both fronts.
She knew what she did broke Sebastien’s heart.
The worst part was that his brother had rejected her, so she had not even gained anything from the betrayal. She had gambled with the one man who loved her and lost him without winning the other. After that, Sebastien never looked at her or loved her the same way again. Their relationship had been toxic since then. Sometimes they acted like they could still function together. Sometimes they planned together, moved together, fought together, slept together. But underneath it all, they could never return to where they
were.
Something had died and refused to leave the room.
She had given up on being Luna for a while and accepted her fate with Sebastien until the Alpha recruited them to help with his project. In exchange, he promised them a pack and said he would give them one of the packs they conquered. But the Alpha had let them know he had his eyes on Whitewood most of all. That had made Cynthia dream again. Whitewood was powerful. Whitewood had status. Whitewood had a name that meant something. If she could stand inside that power, maybe the years of humiliation
would finally mean something.
Cynthia sat on the bed and wept a bit. Not loudly. Not in a way Sebastien would hear and come back to mock her. Just quietly, with her shoulders trembling and her hands pressed together. Then she wiped away her tears and pretended everything was okay when
Sebastien entered the room again.
He looked at her, and for a second, something like regret crossed his face. It came too late. It always came too late.
“You need to stop going behind my back. You need to stop it, Cynthia. Every time I am about to start trusting you again, you go and pull off a stunt like this. What happened to trust? Where is your loyalty?” he said, feeling bad for hitting her.
The truth was that he was not always like that. Cynthia knew it, and that made it harder. He had not begun as a monster. She had not begun as someone afraid of his hand. Their relationship had not started with fear and bruised pride. But Cynthia had managed to bring out the monster in him, and she always did things to aggravate the situation. That was the story he told himself. Maybe it was the story she told herself too because it was easier than admitting they had both become ugly together.
“I am sorry,” she said.

Chapter 219
Sebastien knew she was not sorry, but he kept it to himself. He had dealt with her enough to know when her apology was survival
and when it was truth. This one was survival. He could hear it. But he let it pass because they were too tired to fight again, and
because some part of him still wanted to believe she could stay loyal if he held her hard enough.
