Chapter 208

Morning came, but it did not bring peace.

Levi returned home. He was not himself, really, and no one could blame him. The man looked like someone had emptied him out

and left only his body standing. He had woken up distraught, and Dr Rosenberg had told him of Amber’s condition. Joseph was not

there when Levi first heard it, but he could imagine the blow. Levi might be hard to read. He might have secrets. Ethan and Joseph

might not fully trust him. But whatever else was true, Amber’s sickness had reached him deeply.

The doctor urged him to go home and rest, but Levi was not planning to listen. He went to his room, showered, got some change of clothes, and returned to the hospital without bothering to check on the house residents. All that mattered to him in those moments was Amber. Joseph heard of it and did not know what to think. A part of him was touched. Another part remained guarded. His life

had taught him not to accept devotion without questioning what stood behind it.

Joseph woke up and got ready for the day in a hurry. Brian had returned in the night, so he joined Joseph and Adam. The three of them prepared to return to the hospital when a staff member brought Joseph a letter sent by Sebastien.

Joseph’s stomach churned when he saw who the sender was. His hand tightened around the folded paper before he even opened it.

Sebastien. The name alone made anger climb his throat. It was too soon. Too insulting. The man had attacked them, forced

surrender, walked away believing he had Whitewood, and now he had the nerve to send a letter like some legitimate authority.

But Joseph knew he had to read it.

So he opened it.

“McCloud, I hope you know I won’t be leaving the pack in your care. Do what you must, but I will choose the right person to run

the pack when ready. Hope you had time to tend to your injured family members,” it read.

That was it.

Joseph stared at the words for a while. Not because they were long or complicated, but because of the arrogance sitting behind

them. Sebastien was not rushing. That was what stood out most. For someone who had been packless, for someone who had

supposedly just gained Whitewood, he seemed to be taking his time to spring into action and claim his prize. That did not sit right.

It only boiled down to the fact that Sebastien might not be the main person. But whoever stood behind him, they would have to go

through Sebastien to reach that person. Joseph read the letter again, looking for more than words. Tone. Confidence. Delay. The

threat dressed in calmness. Hope you had time to tend to your injured family members. It was mockery, but it was also a reminder.

Sebastien knew they were weakened. He wanted them to know he knew.

Adam read the letter and handed it to Brian. Although Brian wanted to crumple the paper, Joseph told him not to because it was

evidence and a clue. Every piece mattered now. Every word. Every delay. Every wrong assumption their enemies made. Joseph would

not throw anything away because anger felt better than patience.

Knowing Ethan would be on his way, Joseph chose to make his visit to the hospital short. He had to be back before Ethan arrived. He needed to be home to receive him, to explain whatever had changed, to make sure everyone understood how careful they needed

Arriving at the hospital, Joseph went to where his mother was kept and found Levi sitting on a couch in her room. The sight made him pause. Levi sat there as if he had not slept properly, as if his body had returned home but his mind had remained beside Amber all night. He looked distraught, and in those moments, Joseph thought maybe he cared about his mother.

That thought made Joseph uncomfortable because it complicated things. Ethan and Joseph never trusted Levi completely, and their uncle’s allegation against Levi had worsened it. Regardless, the man was stubborn and remained. He was still with them. He did not run after Alpha McCloud died. He did not walk away from Amber when she became difficult. He did not abandon the family when

Ethan fell. He stayed.
