Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 198

Chapter 198

Ethan’s fingers tightened on the paper. Keith’s jaw clenched. There it was. Seven years ago. Your surgeon. The room seemed to

shrink around those words. Meadow’s face had gone pale.

“You arrived at the hospital unconscious, and I felt it was off because your wolf was completely silenced. I would later find out that

one of the paramedics that rescued you administered Propofol, which knocked you unconscious.”

Keith felt anger rise again, but it was not hot this time. It was cold. Calculating. They had not just taken advantage of an accident. They had prepared for it. They had ensured Ethan was unconscious. They had silenced his wolf before he could defend himself.

Every part of it had been planned.

“While viewing, Dr Rosenberg was on leave then, so I had to double as a general practitioner in the hospital, and it was unfortunate

that I was on duty that day.”

Keith glanced at Ethan. Ethan did not look away from the letter. His eyes kept moving, but something in his face had gone distant, as if he was watching the past reshape itself word by word.

“After administering Detox to you in the ER, I was cornered by Dr Mark. He asked me to speak to someone on the phone. When I answered, I heard my daughter’s voice. They had kidnapped her. Still trying to make sense of the matter, the Alpha in charge of the operation spoke through the phone; he instructed me on what to do if I ever wanted to see my daughter again. They said I should put you in for surgery and place silver in your spine.”

The paper made a faint sound in Ethan’s grip. No one spoke. Keith felt sick. Not because Dr James was innocent. He was not. He had placed silver in Ethan’s spine. He had lied to Amber. He had helped destroy seven years of Ethan’s life. But there was a horror in the reason too. A daughter’s voice on the phone. A threat. A man trapped between his child and his Alpha. It did not erase the crime. It made the whole thing uglier. Crueler. It showed the kind of enemy they were dealing with. An Alpha who did not just attack bodies,

but used love as a weapon.

“He said he did not want you dead, just incapacitated, so you won’t be able to run the pack anymore. I told him I had no reason to send you to the O.R. but he told me to be creative. That was when I lied to your mother about silver in your spine, and we needed

to take it out.”

Ethan’s breathing changed. Keith heard it. Meadow heard it too. There was a quiet cruelty in that sentence that cut deep. Amber had been distraught. A mother afraid for her son. She had trusted doctors. She had signed papers because she believed they were saving him. Instead, they used her fear to gain permission to ruin him.

“She was distraught and signed the papers. Because Dr Rosenberg was your doctor, I named him your consulting Physician to cover my tracks. Mark and I placed the shards there.”

Keith closed his eyes for half a second. So Rosenberg had been innocent of the surgery, at least according to James. Used as cover. His name placed where blame would fall later if the truth ever rose. Mark had helped. Mark was dead. Dr James had lived seven years with guilt and fear, then returned when the goddess or fate or his own conscience gave him a chance to fix what he had done.

“I am sorry, Alpha, but that was all I could do to save my child.”

The apology sat there like something too small for what it tried to cover. Sorry could not return seven years. Sorry could not give Ethan the battles he had missed, the life stolen, the dignity crushed, the Alpha seat weakened, the marriage strained, the pack left vulnerable. But Keith could not pretend he did not understand a father trying to save his child. That was what made it hurt in a

different way.

“I spent seven years regretting what I did and watching my back. My daughter is far from Whitewood now, and I am free from my

burdens today. I am grateful that the goddess gave me a second chance to right a wrong. I am hiding permanently because I do not

want the Alpha that spoke to me that day to get to me. They had already killed Mark last year when he threatened to confess.

hope I can live long enough for you to get your revenge. I wish you the best. Dr James Pitsberge,” it read.

The room stayed silent after the last word. Ethan was in shock. There was no other word for it. His face had gone still, but not empty. Too much was moving beneath the surface. The past had just been torn open and filled with new names, new motives, new betrayals. Dr Rosenberg, possibly innocent. Dr James, guilty and yet responsible for saving him now. Dr Mark dead because he had threatened to confess. An unknown Alpha at the centre of it, hidden behind a phone call, powerful enough to kidnap a doctor’s

daughter and arrange Ethan’s destruction.

Keith looked at his friend and felt the weight of it all. Ethan had already been carrying enough. His mother injured. His pack stolen on the surface. Cynthia’s betrayal. Sebastien sitting in Whitewood like a thief wearing a crown. And now this. Proof that his paralysis had not been a medical tragedy, not an accident, not even a simple conspiracy by doctors, but a deliberate political strike ordered by an Alpha who wanted him alive but broken.

Ethan looked at Keith. His eyes were hard, but there was something wounded in them too, something almost too raw to watch.

“Call Joseph and tell him that Dr Rosenberg is innocent,” Ethan ordered.

Keith nodded. There was no argument to make now. Whatever suspicion remained would have to be handled properly, but the letter had changed things. Joseph had to know before Rosenberg was punished for a crime Dr James had confessed to.

Meadow took the letter from Ethan to read.
