Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 181

Chapter 181

Dr James checked carefully for any more. But the area was clean after that. The dark masses had hindered Ethan from walking, yes. But they had also kept the silver from spreading faster and killing him sooner. It was a cruel sort of mercy from the body itself.

Once the shards were out, Dr James moved quickly. No hesitation. No moment wasted admiring what he had found. The nurse administered antibiotics through the IV as instructed. Ethan’s wolf genes, weakened though they were, would have to do the rest

when they woke enough to fight for him again.

The surgery took three hours. It was a long three hours outside, though shorter inside where hands were busy and eyes fixed and no

one had room for time. But it was successful.

When it was over, Keith and his Kappa helped move Ethan carefully from the ambulance to his bedroom. The hospital bed had already been placed there so they could transfer him straight onto it. He was heavily sedated, limp in the way only deep medical sleep made a man look, and seeing him like that unsettled everybody even while relief spread through them.

Once he was on the bed, the nurse began running the antibiotics IV. The detox would not start for another forty-eight hours, not until his wolf genes kicked in properly enough to assist. For now the priority was simpler and just as important: make sure he did not develop an infection. Make sure his body held. Make sure the success of the operation did not turn meaningless through some

complication in the hours after it.

Still, the worst of it had passed. The surgery had succeeded. Everyone who was still awake felt the relief of that in a wave. Dr James placed the silver shards and the black muscle that had wrapped around them into a ziplock bag and handed it to Keith.

Keith stared at it and felt his anger rise like heat. The doctor had been right. Ethan had been sabotaged. Not just injured. Not

merely unlucky. Deliberately ruined.

Keith took out his phone immediately. It was late, but Joseph needed to know. There was no question of waiting till morning. Joseph had slept most of the afternoon and was awake early, so he answered Keith’s call quickly. Keith told him the bad news first. Dr

James had been right. Then the good news. The silver had been taken out.

Joseph sat there in stunned silence for a moment after hearing it. He could not believe what they had actually found. Theory had become proof. Suspicion had become something heavy enough to hold in a bag. He dreaded what other things might unfold now

that this much was true.

Once Ethan was out of the woods, Joseph knew exactly what he wanted to do next. He planned to issue an arrest for Dr Rosenberg

and Mark Luis. He wanted to come to the cabin at once, but Keith told him not to. Not with the pending threat. Not with

Whitewood already too stretched. Joseph understood even though every instinct in him wanted to move closer to Ethan now that

the truth was this ugly.

Instead he told Keith that Ethan should call him when he woke. Then he ended the call carrying two things at once: relief that his

brother had survived the surgery and cold fury at what had been done to him. It was good news in one sense. Good enough that

Joseph already planned on sharing it with Amber.

But the night did not allow them long to sit with any of that.

Because not long after Keith’s call ended, the alarm went off.

Their pack was under attack.
