Chapter 176

“I am to give you a detox cocktail for a month, administered intravenously to speed up your recovery process. You will feel the difference once the shards are all out,” Camila said.

Ethan did not entirely like it, but deep down he knew she was right and Dr James was right too. James would become a burden if he stayed. Ethan could not keep collecting endangered people inside his house and pretending they were all safe because he wanted them close. Security was already stretched thin. The few warriors they trusted needed to be used carefully. If Dr James required protection later, Ethan would not have the men to spare, not in this climate. So, reluctantly, he relented.

“Very well, what will he need?” Ethan asked.

“Nothing. He just wants to carry out the operation and ensure you are alright before leaving. He will leave a day or two after, the operation. Once it is successful,” Camila replied.

Ethan nodded. Camila paused again after that. This second part was harder. She looked at Ethan and Meadow, and Ethan, without

realising it, had tightened his hold on Meadow’s hands.

“We will have to have the operation in the ambulance here because of what happened, so the risk will be very high, Alpha,” Camila

said.

Meadow reacted immediately. She became uneasy and shook her head before Ethan could answer. Fear moved through the link

between them so strongly that Ethan felt it as if it were his own.

“Luna, please,” Camila said softly.

Camila’s voice softened because she knew her hands were tied and Meadow knew it too.

“I wish we had a choice, but we do not stand a chance out there since there are people after you two that do not want you to get better. We cannot take chances. Although it is risky doing it here, it is also risky doing it there. Anything could go wrong. We could be tailed and attacked in the middle of the procedure. They could have saboteurs at the clinic if we take you there for help,” Camila explained.

She kept going because hesitation would only make the truth crueller.

“There is more that can go wrong out there than here, Luna, so please consider,” Camila added.

Ethan was reluctant. Of course he was. He did not like the idea of the operation happening so close to the room where Meadow slept, so close to the life they were trying to build, so close to danger. But he also knew choice was no longer a clean thing. Every option came with risk. Every road led somewhere ugly. At least this one gave them some control.

So he caved. And that was it. He agreed. Camila looked visibly relieved to have that settled. She brought out a consent form for him to sign, along with a disclaimer stating what could go wrong. Ethan read enough to know the shape of the danger before signing. Nothing about it comforted Meadow.

Chapter 176

He sighed after that and squeezed her hands. He knew he needed to spend time with her now. Properly. Not because she asked, but because he could feel her fear and because he had his own. He would have loved, more than anything, to take her outside into the woods and let Nightshade run and burn some of the tension from her body. He would have loved to shift if he could, or stand if he could, or walk beside her the way a husband should. But that would have been stupid and reckless and possibly the last stupid thing he ever did if someone was truly watching the cabin.

So he settled for what he had. He pulled his chair closer, transferred himself into it, and asked his wife to join him in their bedroom. They would have to make do with the small balcony attached to the room. The view. The air. The illusion of space without the danger of stepping into too much of it.

Hopefully, he thought, and the thought came with enough hunger to almost hurt, soon he would be able to carry her. Soon he would be able to do all the things his body had denied him for seven long years. Hold her standing. Kiss her properly without planning around furniture and effort and careful movement. Love her on his feet. Walk with her. Take her where he pleased.

But for now, he had to manage with this.
