Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 173

Chapter 173

“Camila’s husband was attacked last night. They wanted to know what was going on with Meadow. We had to rescue him and take

him to the cabin last night,” Joseph said.

Amber stared at him.

“Are you serious?” Amber asked.

He nodded once. The shock in her face was immediate and real. Of all the things she expected Joseph to say, that was clearly not

one of them. She had asked about Ethan and Ceenas, about pack matters and external threats. Meadow being at the centre of some

violent mess like that had not crossed her mind. Not like this.

“Why would anyone want to monitor Meadow’s progress?” Amber asked.

Joseph sighed.

“Beats me,” Joseph said.

And he left it there. He did not want to bring Ethan into it yet. Not the silver. Not the doctor. Not the possibility that Ethan’s

condition might have been manufactured and maintained. Not until they were sure. So he gave Amber only the part already ugly

enough to justify caution. Meadow was being watched somehow. That was true. Brad had nearly died under questions linked to

Meadow’s therapy. That was also true. The rest could wait.

Amber watched him quietly for a moment. She knew her son well enough to hear the things he was not saying. But before she could

press further, Joseph shifted the conversation first.

“How are you feeling now?” Joseph asked.

That softened her expression.

“I feel better, really. Doctor Rosenberg gave me meds to help detox,” Amber replied.

The minute she said the doctor’s name, Joseph felt discomfort move through him. Quick. Sharp. Involuntary. He tried not to show it

too obviously, but he knew what he had learned. Or what he might have learned. And hearing Amber mention Rosenberg so casually,

so trustingly, made him feel suddenly protective in a way that bordered on alarm.

“Mother, can you stay away from doctors for now?” Joseph asked.

Amber frowned at once.

“Why?” Amber asked.

Joseph could not tell her exactly why. Not yet. Not without dragging her into the same terrible uncertainty he had been carrying

since the night before. So he reached for the safest truth he had.

Chapter 173

“We aren’t sure yet, but we will figure it out soon. I need you to stay away from doctors and meds for now. If you need medical

help, go to a neighbouring pack’s hospital,” Joseph said.

Amber’s frown deepened.

“Did you find something out about our doctor?” Amber asked.

Joseph shook his head.

“Speculations. We aren’t sure yet, but it is best to play it safe,” Joseph replied.

Amber sighed because she knew that tone. Knew he was shielding her from the full shape of whatever he had stumbled into. She did not like it, but she also knew Joseph would not tell her more just because she wanted it. Still, her mind was already moving.

“We need to find out who is after Meadow. It might be that bitch Cynthia. Was that why you dumped Ashley?” Amber asked.

Joseph chuckled at that, though the sound held more exhaustion than humour.

“So she came to you?” Joseph asked.

Amber nodded. Joseph leaned back slightly and let out another tired breath.

“I figured she will. I am done, really. She is just too much, and she blatantly called my bluff twice. I can’t deal with that shit,”

Joseph said.

Amber understood more than he probably expected. She might not have liked Ashley, but she understood why repeated defiance would harden Joseph this way. There were things a man could forgive if he felt like trying. But once respect itself broke, love or

attraction rarely carried enough weight to rebuild it.

“What about her pregnancy?” Amber asked.

Joseph’s jaw tightened slightly, but his answer came firm.

“I will take them from her once she gives birth. I am done,” Joseph said.
